The Emory University Men's Soccer team captured the 2017 Sonny Carter Invitational Tournament crown Saturday night with a 1-0 victory over Pacific Lutheran University. The tournament win is the first for the Eagles since 2014 and the 10th overall since the tournament was created in 1992.
Senior Cody Gardiner was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player after registering the only goal of the game on Saturday while leading an Emory defensive unit that posted back to back shutouts and allowed just three shots on goal across the two games.
Gardiner netted what acted as the game-winner in the 13th minute on Saturday, knocking in a pass from right in front off the feed from junior Aidan Datené on the end line following an Adam Ferguson corner kick.
Joining Gardiner on the All-Tournament from Emory were seniors Jason McCartney, Ferguson and juniors Moustafa Khattab and Tyler Santee.
The Eagles head to Lexington, VA next weekend for a pair of matchups against Washington & Lee and Randolph College in the Washington & Lee Invitational.
