Men's Soccer Knocks Off #16/17 WashU, 2-1, for Fifth Consecutive Win

Men's Soccer Knocks Off #16/17 WashU, 2-1, for Fifth Consecutive Win

The Emory University Men's Soccer team began University Athletic Association play on a high note Saturday afternoon, knocking off #16/17 Washington University in St. Louis, 2-1, for its fifth straight win.

The Eagles controlled possession for much of the contest, outshooting the Bears 12-8 and winning the battle of the corner kicks, 8-3.

WashU had the first scoring opportunity of the afternoon with a penalty kick opportunity in the 16th minute. WashU's Kyle Perez went left but his shot drifted too far wide and hit the post to keep the score deadlocked at zero.

Senior Jason McCartney had Emory's first real scoring threat in the 23rd minute as classmate Christian Meyer found him in good position inside the 18 after streaking down the sidelines while somehow keeping the ball in play. McCartney appeared to have a good look on target but a WashU defender was able to get a piece of the shot at the last second. On the ensuing corner kick, junior Aidan Datené put the Eagles ahead with a great diving header near the far post. Junior Moustafa Khattab collected the assist on the play.

The Bears knotted the score at 1-1 in the 50th minute as Chris Rieger was successful on WashU's second penalty kick of the game. The PK was set up by a hard tackle inside the 18.

The game remained tied until the 66th minute when senior Michael Carragher put the Eagles in front for good with his second goal of the season. Senior Evan Floersch hit Carragher in the middle of the box with a far pass from near the Emory bench. Carragher then bodied around a WashU defender for position and blasted home the decisive goal from eight yards out over the Washington goalkeeper's head.

The Eagles begin the month of October with a non-conference matchup at Piedmont College Tuesday evening in Demorest, GA. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Notes

The win over the Bears snaps their nine-game unbeaten streak, dating back to last season...The goal by Carragher is the first goal allowed by WashU in the second half this season.
