To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Emory athletes have now claimed 183 Academic All-American honors in the program's history. An Academic All-America Third Team selection in 2016, McCartney becomes the first two-time Academic All-American in Men's Soccer team history and the fifth First Team honoree joining John Symbas (1999), Kevin McCarthy (2004), Adam Waxman (2010) and Matt Sherr (2015).

A Biology major with a Russian minor and owner of a 3.92 cumulative grade-point average, McCartney excelled in all facets during his senior campaign. He finished third among UAA leaders in goals scored (13), fourth in points (29), fifth in shot attempts (58) and tied for sixth in shots on goal (25). McCartney registered multi-goal contests in wins over NC Wesleyan, Piedmont, NYU, Berry and Dickinson in the first round of the NCAA tournament and added tallies in victories against Sewanee, Maryville and Carthage.

His First Team Academic All-America selection comes on the heels of United Soccer Coaches Third Team All-America, First Team All-Region and First Team All-UAA kudos. He joins Symbas as the only Eagles in program history to be selected as both a NSCAA/USC All-American and Academic All-American in the same season.

Emory notched the second most wins ever for a single season in 2017, finishing 15-5-2 overall and reached the NCAA Elite Eight for just the second time in team history.
