NYU Scores Late to Shock No. 24/10 Emory Men's Soccer

A late goal by New York University proved to be the difference maker Friday night as the Violets handed the No. 24/10 ranked Emory University Men's Soccer team a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in University Athletic Association action at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, New York.

NYU's Maxi Rodriguez scored the lone goal of the contest in the 81st minute, knocking in a rebound to help the Violets to the victory. Sophomore Cole Gallagher initially made the save on a shot opportunity by Oliver Kleborn but the ball bounced off of Gallagher's chest and straight to Rodriguez who was able to finish off the post for his fourth goal of the season.

The Eagles had several chances to break even over the closing minutes of the match but were denied each time by the NYU's Grant Engel. Senior Tyler Santee had back-to-back header attempts in the 84th and 85th minute but Engel made two spectacular diving saves.

Emory had one last opportunity with five seconds remaining as junior William Jones blasted a shot from straight on and 12 yards out but Engel made a leaping one-handed stop to help the Violets prevail.

The Eagles will now make the quick turnaround as the team travels to Waltham, MA for a meeting with Brandeis University Sunday morning beginning at 11:00 AM.
