Men's Soccer Blanks Pomona-Pitzer, 1-0, in Sonny Carter Invitational Opener

The Emory University men's soccer team opened the Sonny Carter Invitational with a 1-0 decision over Pomona-Pitzer College Saturday evening at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta, GA.

Sophomore Matt Engler supplied the Eagles with the decisive goal, finding the back of the net on the far post in the 75th minute. Senior Jun Tsuru set the play up, weaving around Sagehens defenders before finding freshman Alejandro Gomez on the right side of the 18. Gomez used a great first touch to separate from his defender before finding Engler on the other side of the six where he finished it home.

Gomez finished the match with a game-high four shots with one on target with junior Nate Sampson and sophomore Ethan Cohen adding three shots, one on goal, apiece.

Emory maintained possession for the majority of the match, outshooting the Sagehens 16-8 and holding PPC to just three shots on goal. Junior Cole Gallagher made three stops that came his way as he collected his eighth career clean sheet.

The Eagles have a chance to clinch their third straight Sonny Carter Invitational crown Sunday night when Emory hosts Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, beginning at 7:00 PM at the WoodPEC.
