CMS Hands Emory Men's Soccer 1-0 Defeat

The Emory University men's soccer team dropped its first contest of the 2019 season Sunday night as the Eagles fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps by a 1-0 margin on the third and final day of the Sonny Carter Invitational in Atlanta, GA.

A penalty kick goal was the difference maker in the match as the Stags converted following a penalty in the box in the 48th minute. CMS put pressure on the Eagles deep in their end and an Emory clearance attempt took a deflection right back into the box. CMS' William Barton earned the inside track to the loose ball and had a golden chance at the go-ahead goal before being pulled down from behind for a penalty kick. Junior keeper Cole Gallagher guessed correctly on the penalty attempt as he got his fingertips on the ball but Birchard hit it with enough pace to get it through and into the net to break the scoreless tie.

The Eagles had their best chance of the second half to tie the score at one as sophomore Ethan Cohen one-timed a shot from 12-yards out but drilled the crossbar. Junior Nate Sampson also come close to the near post on a set piece that got through traffic in the 70th minute.

The game was evenly played for the most part with CMS holding a 12-10 edge in shot attempts and a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. CMS keeper Jacob Mays picked up his first clean sheet of the season with four saves in the contest while Gallagher finished the contest with two stops.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, Gallagher and sophomore Matt Engler were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Emory continues its four-game homestand to begin the year next Friday as the Eagles host crosstown rival Oglethorpe University. Kickoff from the WoodPEC is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
