Emory Men's Soccer Outlasts Brandeis, 2-1

The Emory University men's soccer team earned a key University Athletic Association victory Friday night, defeating Brandeis University, 2-1, at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta, GA.

A flurry of second half goals including two off the feet of freshman Alejandro Gomez and senior Corey Levine helped lift the Eagles to their ninth win of the year, improving to 9-5-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the UAA. The two goals marked just the third time all season the Judges allowed two or more in a contest as they fell to 9-4-4 and 2-2-1 in the UAA. The Judges entered the weekend receiving votes in both the United Soccer Coaches and D3Soccer.com national rankings.

After a relatively uneventful first half, the second half was the complete opposite including a three minute stretch that featured the game's three goals.

Gomez opened the scoring in the 59th minute, when he took a failed clearance attempt and shot it past a leaping Greg Irwin into the top right corner. It was his second goal of the season.

In the 62nd minute, Brandeis' Dylan Hennessy equalized, blasting a shot from 20 yards out that deflected off an Emory defender and past sophomore Max Carlson. The goal was Hennessy's second of the campaign.

Off the ensuing restart, the Eagles responded just 18 second later. Emory worked the ball around their defensive midfield then got it up to junior Nate Sampson. Sampson delivered a through-ball that released Levine free on the keeper, where he then lofted it over Irwin for his third goal of the campaign.

The Judges had a couple of corner kicks after falling behind again, but their best attempt to equalize again came in the 80th minute, when a service from the left flank caught Carlson off his line, and senior Max Breiter headed it just wide of the near post.

For the game, Carlson made a total of six saves as he improved to 5-2-1 compared to his counterpart's three stops.

The Eagles, winners of two straight, wrap up their current UAA weekend Sunday afternoon as they entertain NYU at the WoodPEC at 1:30 PM.
