Senior Trio Leads Men's Soccer Past Illinois Wesleyan, 3-0, in Sonny Carter Finale

The Emory University men's soccer team reached the win column for the first time in the 2022 season, posting a convincing 3-0 victory over Illinois Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon in the finale of the Sonny Carter Invitational.

Three different Eagles found nylon as Emory reached the three goals mark for the second consecutive contest. The Eagles dominated all facets on Saturday, holding an 18-5 advantage in total shots while owning 61 percent of total possession.

Emory continued right where it left off from Friday night as senior Zach Kornblum netted the team's first goal of the day in the 14th minute. Kornblum got past one defender, dribbled inside the box before deking another, allowing him to finish to the far post out of the reach of the Titans keeper. It was Kornblum's second career goal and first since 2019.

The score remained 1-0 until the 69th minute when the Eagles converted on a pair moments apart. The first goal came at the 68:07 mark when senior Will Tichy put a header to the back corner on the double assist from classmates Matthew Tanzer and William Knight. Just over three minutes later, fellow senior Alejandro Gomez was successful on a penalty kick after he was tripped in the box. Both goals for Tichy and Gomez were their first of 2022.

Following the conclusion of the weekend's action a total of 13 players were named to the Sonny Carter Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Next up the Eagles will take on Birmingham-Southern Tuesday night in Birmingham before venturing north to Baltimore for a two-day tournament at Johns Hopkins on September 9 and 10.
