Hampden-Sydney Takes Down Emory Men's Soccer at W&L

Hampden-Sydney recorded four goals in the first half en route to defeating the Emory University men's soccer team, 5-2, Friday night in Lexington, VA on the campus of Washington & Lee.

The Tigers scored the game's first three goals, with all three scores coming within the game's opening 20 minutes. H-SC led off the scoring with Declan Shaw scoring off a perfect touch pass over the top of the defense by Stefan Ngoh. H-SC doubled its tally two minutes later after a free kick found the head of Boyce Purdie and he fought again for a second header which found the run of Alexander who beat the keeper. Zakky Johnston made it a 3-0 game as he pushed home a goal off the assist from Alexander.

The Eagles began to claw their way back, getting one goal back five minutes later as senior Trey Rielly took a shot that was saved by the keeper but freshman Josh Grand pounced on the rebound and put it home for his second goal of the season. Emory made it a one score game at the 32:27 mark with senior Alejandro Gomez recording his team-leading third goal of the year on a great direct free kick finish.

However, that was as close as the Eagles' comeback would come as the Tigers put a stop to the rally less than a minute later with Johnston's second goal of the game. The final goal of the night came in the 53rd minute when Alexander tacked on another to his score sheet.

Looking to rebound from back-to-back tough defeats, the Eagles will try to close out the weekend strong in Lexington Sunday afternoon, taking on No. 13 Washington & Lee at 3:00 PM.
