Cindy Cheng, Oliver Smith Tabbed as UAA Swimmers of the Week

Emory University senior swimmers Cindy Cheng and Oliver Smith were named the University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week announced Monday evening. It is the third time this season and 10th overall Cheng has been bestowed the honor while this marks the first time this season and fourth of Smith’s career he has garnered the weekly honor.

Cheng won all three individual events and added a pair of relay wins as the Eagles posted a second place showing at the Miami Invitational this past weekend in Oxford, OH. Cheng broke her previous school record in the 200 Backstroke (1:56.63, also was a meet record) and threw down times of 4:51.43 in the 500 Freestyle and 1:47.84 in the 200 Freestyle. All three times represented NCAA B Cuts while her 200 Free & Back times rank as the fastest in Division III so far this season. Cheng participated in four relay events over the three-day meet, helping the Eagles to first place honors in the 800 Freestyle (7:21.08) and 400 Freestyle (3:22.68), a second place finish in the 200 Medley (1:42.40) and third in the 400 Medley (3:45.62). All four times were NCAA B Cuts.

Smith paced the Eagles to a 4th place team finish at the Miami Invitational, winning a pair of individual events in the 50 and 100 Freestyles and added another in the 400 Freestyle Relay. Smith registered the first NCAA A Cut for the Eagles this season in the 50 Free (19.60) and swam to a NCAA B Cut time in the 100 Free (43.90), with the 50 Free time currently ranking as the top mark in Division III so far this season. Smith added a fourth place finish in the 100 Butterfly and recorded a NCAA B Cut of 48.86 during prelims. During the meet, Smith was also part of three relays that registered NCAA qualifying times: 200 Medley (2nd, 1:29.00), 400 Medley (2nd, 3:17.50) and 400 Free (1st, 2:57.52 – Meet Record).

The Eagles will be back in action on January 12th as Emory travels to Division II’s Florida Southern for a dual meet beginning at 3:00 PM in Lakeland, FL.
