Swimming & Diving Adds Four Event Wins and 26 NCAA B Cuts on Final Day of Denison Invite

The Emory University swimming and diving teams wrapped up competition at the Denison Invitational Saturday evening with the men’s team placing second in the team standings with 1,729.5 points and the women coming in third with 1,560 points.

The men added three more event wins and 12 NCAA B Cuts on the final day of competition, bringing their three-day total to 11 event victories. For the women, the Eagles saw one event win on Saturday while totaling 14 NCAA B Cuts.

Earning event wins for the Emory men on Saturday were sophomore Lucas Bumgarner who took first in the 3-meter diving event with a finals score of 334.75, giving him a diving sweep, freshman Nicholas Goudie in the 100 Freestyle and the 400 Freestyle Relay of Goudie, senior Sage Ono and sophomores Colin LaFave and Pat Pema. Goudie won his third individual event of the weekend as he took first in the 100 Freestyle at 43.88 and aided in Emory’s fourth relay victory of the meet as the group touched in a time of 2:57.97.

In addition to the three wins, the Emory men also saw a second-place finish by freshman Jason Hamilton in the 200 Breaststroke (2:00.42) and third place efforts by Pema in the 200 Backstroke (1:47.83; 1:47.34 – prelims) and Ono in the 100 Freestyle (44.88).

For the Emory women, freshman Caroline Maki highlighted the team on the final day of events as she claimed the 100 Freestyle win with a time of 50.47.

To go along with Maki’s win, the Eagles turned in a second-place performance from Maki, junior Lucy Daro, sophomore Taylor Leone and senior Caroline Olson in the 400 Free Relay (3:23.17) and third place finishes by sophomore Gaige Elms in the 200 Backstroke (1:59.64) and sophomore Allie Dixon in the 200 Butterfly (2:02.48).

The Eagles return to the pool following the break for finals and the holiday on Friday, January 10th when the team takes on Florida Southern College.
