Emory Swimming Alum Andrew Wilson Set to Make Historic Olympics Debut in Tokyo

The wait is finally over as former Emory University swimmer Andrew Wilson will make his much-anticipated Olympics debut for Team USA this weekend as the 2020 Olympic Games are set to get underway in Tokyo, Japan. The Opening Ceremonies will be held on Friday, July 23 with the swimming competition to take place beginning Saturday, July 24 and continuing through Sunday, August 1.

Wilson was one of 25 American men to qualify for the United States at last month's Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, Nebraska. Wilson finished second in both events he competed in (100/200 Breaststroke) to earn a qualifying spot on the team, making history as he became the first swimmer from the Division III ranks to qualify for the U.S. Team in Olympic history.

The competition slate for Wilson begins on Saturday, July 24 with the preliminary heats of the 100 Breaststroke, starting at 7:25 AM EDT. He will be in heat six beginning at 7:37 AM EDT. There will be seven preliminary heats of the 100 Breaststroke with the top 16 swimmers advancing to semifinals which will take place beginning at 10:33 PM EDT on July 24. Should Andrew be among the top-eight to advance to the medal final, that race will take place at 10:12 PM EDT on Sunday, July 25.

For the 200 Breaststroke, the five preliminary heats will get underway at 6:35 AM EDT on Tuesday, July 27 with the semifinals featuring the fastest 16 swimmers to follow at 10:21 PM EDT on July 27. Wilson will be in the fourth preliminary heat, scheduled to start at 6:46 AM EDT. The medal finals of the 200 Breaststroke is scheduled to occur on Wednesday, July 28 at 9:44 PM EDT.

Wilson may also participate in the 4x100 medley relay event for Team USA during the week however his involvement in that event is contingent on his preliminary outcomes. There will also be an in-person watch party on Saturday, July 24. Join Emory President Gregory L. Fenves and Athletic Director Keiko Price at the Emory Student Center Recreation Lounge to watch Wilson's 100-meter breaststroke heat, starting at 7:30 AM EDT. Faculty, staff, students and alumni are all welcome to attend.

The 2020 Olympic Games are expected to be the last time Wilson will compete professionally as the 27-year-old Bethesda, Maryland native plans to retire following competition to attend graduate school at Oxford University in the United Kingdom later this fall.
