John Petroff joined the Emory University Swimming and Diving Coaching Staff in the middle of the 2012-13 season, serving as an assistant coach for the varsity squad.

Petroff has helped coach the women’s squad to NCAA Division III Championships in all but one season on the staff, while helping the men’s team to their first two team National Championships in 2017 and 2022. The Eagles have won National Championships in 31 individual events and 34 relays, securing 538 all-America certificates during his tenure on staff. Emory also claimed both the men’s and women’s University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships in his nine years with the team.

Petroff returns to Emory after an accomplished career as an Eagle, swimming for the squad from 2007-10 and serving as a team captain his senior year.  He is a nine-time All-American, including second-place finishes in the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly events at the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships.  Petroff also claimed five UAA Championships and seven all-UAA honors in conference competition over his four-year career.

Petroff earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Emory in 2010.
