2005-06 Athletes Of The Week

(April 10) -  Emory senior Jesse Ferlianto ran his singles record to a perfect 15-0 this past week with three straight set victories. Ferlianto, who has competed in positions four, five and six, leads the second-ranked Eagles in victories. Two of the three victories were straight set shut-outs as he defeated Robbie Ferris of Averett University (Va.) and Jake LeMaster of Piedmont College (Ga.) by scores of 6-0, 6-0.


(April 3) - Sophomore Hardy Ehlers picked up his eighth win of the season on Friday versus Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College to now stand 8-5 on the season.  Ehlers defeated Karim Belhadj 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 singles to improve to 2-1 at the position.  He is 4-3 at No. 4 and 2-1 at No. 6.  Ehlers also has a winning record in doubles play, standing 8-6.


(March 27) - Senior Patrick Redmond improved his singles record to 11-2 on the season, following three wins this past week.  Redmond competed twice at No. 2 and once at No. 3 to earn his victories.  For the season he stands 7-1 at No. 3 singles, 3-1 at No. 2 singles and 1-0 at No. 1 singles.  In doubles competition, Redmond also has an 11-2 record, winning all three doubles matches this past week. 


(March 20) - Freshman Michael Goodwin turned in a solid effort this past week in helping lead the Emory men's tennis team to three victories.  Goodwin competed at the one, two and three positions, winning all three matches.  He stands 7-3 on the season.  He is 5-3 at No. 1 singles, 1-0 at No. 2 singles and 1-0 at No. 3 singles.  In doubles play Goodwin stands 5-3 on the season.  He is 4-2 at No. 1 doubles and 1-1 at No. 3 doubles.


(March 13) - Junior Yoji Masuoka claimed his fifth singles victory of the season this past Monday against Berry College (Ga.), winning 6-2, 6-0.  He now stands 5-2 on the season.  He is 3-3 on the season in doubles.


(Feb. 27) - Jesse Ferlianto went 3-0 this past weekend in No. 4 singles for Emory as it competed in the ITA National Indoors.  He also finished 2-1 in doubles as Emory claimed third place in the tournament.  Ferlianto now stands 6-0 on the season in singles. 


(Feb. 20) - Yoji Masuoka went 2-1 in the No. 2 singles position this past weekend for the Eagles. In Friday's season-opening match with Washington & Lee University (Va.) Masuoka defeated David Shay 6-3, 6-1. On Saturday against the University of the South he battled to a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win over Charlie Boyd. The final match on Saturday had Emory facing NCAA Division I member Furman University. Masuoka turned in a solid effort before falling to Brian Crook 4-6, 5-7.


(Oct. 3, 2005) - Senior Patrick Redmond claimed the singles title at the ITA South Region Championships, hosted by Emory University. Redmond, seeded sixth for the event, won the tournament over teammate and top seed Yoji Masuoka 6-4, 6-3. During the tournament he defeated third seed Michael Goodwin, also of Emory 6-1, 1-6, 6-2. Through six matches, Redmond only dropped one set. He now moves on to the ITA Championships in Fort Myers, Fla., Oct. 13-16, where he finished fifth last season.
