5-4.
Emory's No. 1 doubles team of junior Michael Goodwin and sophomore
Oliver Lopp earned an 8-6 win over The Citadel's tandem of Daniel
Dossetor and Yufo Sutantio, but the Bulldogs earned the doubles
point by virtue of claiming the other two matches. The
Citadel recorded victories in all six singles matches en route to a
7-0 decision.
Head Coach John Browning and his squad then met the Buccaneers of
Charleston Southern and came out on the short end of a 4-3 verdict.
CSU earned the doubles point after winning all three matches
and secured the win after posting victories in three singles
contests. Recording points for the Emory cause were Lopp with a
7-5, 6-3 win over Chris Peek at No. 4 singles, freshman Colin Egan
at No. 5 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Luis Maselli and
sophomore Chris Redmond at No. 6 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph
over Keith Whittingham.
Emory had little trouble in its final performance, recording a 9-0
win over the Spartans of Dubuque. The Eagles dropped just
four games in the whole match and brought home 6-0, 6-0 wins in
five of the singles matches and two doubles contests.
Emory will embark on a trip to Hawaii over spring break where it
will play three NCAA Division II teams, two of whom are
ranked. The Eagles will play BYU-Hawaii on Mar. 11 before
taking on No. 11 Hawaii Pacific on Mar. 12 and No. 36 Hawaii-Hilo
on Mar. 15.

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS STARTS SPRING SEASON WITH TWO DUAL-MATCH VICTORIES
(Feb. 9) - The varsity men's tennis team kicked off their spring season with two convincing victories. The first came over Division III foe Millsaps College. In the No. 1 singles position, junior Michael Goodwin (Rockville, MD) faced off against former Oxford College of Emory University standout Murphey Parker, notching a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Emory was quickly able to capitalize, earning a 3-0 lead by winning all three doubles matches. This success continued in singles, where the Eagles never lost a set.
In the second dual match of the day, Emory faced off against Piedmont College. After again winning all three doubles matches, the Eagles swept through singles without losing a match, losing a total of only ten games in all six matches. The tightest match was between Michael Goodwin and David Gillespie (Piedmont) at the No. 1 singles position, where Goodwin emerged victorious with a 6-2, 7-6 (2) decision.
Emory's next home match will take place on Feb. 16 at 3:00 p.m. at the Woodruff P.E. Center, where the Eagles will play host to Auburn University-Montgomery.

2008 MEN'S TENNIS SPRING SEASON PREVIEW
(Feb. 1) - The Emory University men's tennis team will begin its spring season with two home matches on Saturday, Feb. 9. They take on Millsaps College at 9:00 a.m., and then play host to Piedmont College at 4:00 p.m. at the Woodruff P.E. Center in Atlanta.
Head Coach John Browning, entering his eighth year as head coach at Emory, leads the Eagles into the season ranked as the No. 2 team in Division III. Last season, Emory finished the season with this same rank with a runner-up performance at the D-III National Championships.
The Eagles will return five of their six starters in singles from last year's squad, including Michael Goodwin (Rockville, MD), who ranked No. 9 nationally in Division III, posting an overall record of 25-9, including 17-7 at the No. 1 singles position. Goodwin, along with graduated Yoji Masuoka (Tokyo, Japan), finished last season as the No. 2 ranked doubles team in Division III. This past October, Goodwin teamed up with sophomore Oliver Lopp (Hilden, Germany) to finish second in doubles at the ITA Small College Championships, losing in the championship match to Middlebury College. Also making a strong showing this past fall was junior Mark Boren (Englewood, Colo.). At the ITA Southern Regional Championships, Boren captured the singles crown, and went on to finish sixth at the ITA Small College Championships. Entering the spring season, he is currently ranked sixth nationally in Division III.
Coach Browning was very optimistic about the Eagles' squad this year. Although Yoji Masuoka is the only non-remaining starter from last year's team, Browning explained that there is a "wide open race for the lineup. I think we'll let the court results speak for themselves." Browning plans to give every player on the squad a chance to make the starting lineup. Last year's results will not guarantee a starting spot.
According to Browning, this season's schedule is tough and diverse. "We're not really concerned about our overall record," he said. "We've set it [the schedule] up so that we'll peak at the end of the year, just in time for the National Tournament." With more home matches and Emory hosting the UAA Championships this spring, expectations are high. Browning plans to implement a few new strategies this spring.
"We want to get better in doubles compared to last year, and try to find different combinations that work," he said. The players will experience split practices, and will also participate in other activities such as yoga. "We don't want our guys to get too sucked in to the idea of winning a National Championship that they lose focus." With the starting lineups still up for grabs, this looks to be an extremely exciting season.

"The weekend will be good for us in a number of ways," Head Coach
John Browning said. "It serves as a showcase for the freshmen
to demonstrate what they can do in a match environment and to show
where they are. Secondly, it provides an opportunity for the
veterans to attain All-America status as well as possibly improving
upon their standings within the team."
The singles and doubles champions from this weekend's tournament
advance to the Oct. 11-14 Intercollegiate Tennis Association
National Small College Championships at the Mobile (AL) Tennis
Center.
Emory concluded the 2007 spring season with a 22-9 record that
included a berth in the national championship match where it fell
short to UC-Santa Cruz. Along the way last year, the Eagles
claimed the program's 18th consecutive UAA title.
