Emory Men's Tennis Lands Six On All-UAA Team -- Manji Named Player Of The Year

The NCAA Championships-bound Emory University men's tennis team placed a total of six players on the 2017 All-University Athletic Association Team. The Eagles saw two singles players and one doubles team bring home first-team recognition while one singles performer and one doubles pair were afforded second-team kudos.  Voting was conducted by the league's eight head coaches.

Highlighting the Emory representatives was senior Aman Manji (Sammamish WA), who in addition to his first-team nod at No. 1 singles, was selected as conference Player of the Year.  Manji has compiled an overall record of 26-5 this season, 17-4 during the spring portion of the schedule with all of those decisions coming at the No. 1 post.  The top-ranked singles player in the D-III ranks, Manji started out the year on a strong note, winning the ITA South Region singles crown during the fall and following that with a title effort in the D-III portion of the ITA Oracle Cup.  During the spring portion of the schedule, he has won 13 of 15 outings vs. D-III foes and went 3-0 at the UAA Championships, helping the Eagles to a first-place finish while earning tournament MVP honors.  It is the third time in his career that he has been tapped to the first team in singles, capturing the award in 2015 at No. 6 and in 2016 at No. 3.  His MVP honor makes him the eighth different Emory player to earn that distinction.

Freshman Jonathan Jemison (Marietta, GA), the No. 10-ranked singles player nationally (No. 3 in Atlantic South Region), garnered first-team accolades at No. 2 for the second straight season. Jemison has manufactured an overall slate of 23-5, including an 18-4 performance in the spring (14-2 vs. D-III foes).  Runner-up to Manji at the ITA South Region Singles Championships, Jemison was selected to the All-UAA Tournament Team after emerging victorious in all three of his singles encounters.  Jemison heads into next week's NCAA Championships with a six-match win streak.

Junior Scott Rubinstein (Madison, CT) and sophomore James Spaulding (Winnetka, IL) snagged first-team recognition at first doubles.  The duo has been in the win column on 18 decisions in 27 outings this season and stands 15-8 in the spring.  The pair, ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic South Region, won both of their contests during last weekend's opening rounds of the NCAA Championships, bettering the NC Wesleyan team of Sebastian Sikh and

Ioannis Brokakis, and the Sewanee pair of Jack Gray and Alejandro Becker.

Both Manji and Jemison will compete in the NCAA Individual Singles Championships next week for the second straight year while Rubinstein and Spaulding will be making an encore appearance in doubles.

Sophomore Adrien Bouchet (Oakton, VA) was tabbed to the second team at No. 3 singles.  Bouchet has been solid at that post, registering a 13-5 slate during the spring, 16-6 overall. Bouchet is riding an eight-match win streak, second longest on the squad, heading into next week's NCAA Championships. The No. 14-ranked player in the Atlantic South Region, Bouchet earned a spot on the UAA All-Tournament.

Jemison, along with junior David Omsky, were second-team choices at third doubles.  The tandem has rolled to an overall mark of 21-6 and posts a 13-6 effort in the spring, 11-4 at the No. 3 slot.  Jemison and Omsky captured All-America honors in the fall after winning both the ITA South Region championship and the D-III doubles crown at the ITA Oracle Cup.

Capping off the award winners were head coach John Browning, along with assistants Rafe Mosetick and Ian Wagner, being named as the league's Coaching Staff of the Year.  It is the 10th time during Browning's 18 years at Emory that he has been selected for the award.

Emory, 19-4 on the campaign and ranked No. 2 nationally, will match up against Williams College on Monday, May 22, in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA D-III Championships.
