NC Wesleyan Edges Out Sewanee, 5-3, in NCAA Second Round

North Carolina Wesleyan edged out Sewanee, 5-3, Saturday afternoon in the second round of the 2018 NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.

The Battling Bishops, now 19-3 on the season, will face host Emory for a berth to the NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon beginning at 12:00 PM. Emory was 5-1 winners earlier on Saturday against Washington & Lee.

The Battling Bishops took two of the three doubles points to lead off the match. Roberto Puig and Ioannis Brokakis easily posted the 8-1 on court one while JD Telles and Aditya Iyer pulled out the 8-6 victory on court two.

In singles play, NCW registered three wins, all coming in straight sets, to seal the second round victory. At first singles, Sebastian Sikh was a 7-6 (4), 6-2 winner with Brokakis netting a 6-4, 6-1 win on court two and Telles adding a 6-3, 6-4 win at third singles. Brokakis’s win went as the match winner.

Sewanee saw wins in singles by Jordan Brewer (6-1, 6-4) at fourth singles and by Alejandro Becker (6-4, 6-2) at sixth singles. The Tigers conclude their season with a 21-6 overall record.
