The Emory University men's tennis team, the defending NCAA Division III Champion, opens the 2017-18 campaign this weekend when it travels to Rome, Georgia, to compete in the ITA South Region Championships Presented by Oracle. Action begins on Friday, Sept. 29 and runs through Sunday. The event will be held at the Rome Tennis Center with Berry College serving as the host.
The event will feature top players from Division III schools in the region. The singles and doubles champions from this weekend's tournament advance to the Oct. 11-15 ITA Oracle Cup (formerly the Small College Championships) which will be held at the Rome Tennis Center.
Emory has 10 players representatives in the Main Singles Draw, with junior Jonathan Jemison (Marietta, GA) slotted as the No. 1 seed. Jemison finished as the singles runner-up in last year's Championships to former Eagle Aman Manji. Jemison ranked second on the team in victories during the 2016-17 campaign, finishing with an overall slate of 27-6 en route to capturing All-America honors for the second straight year. The Eagles have six returners from last season's national championship squad competing in the Main draw including senior Scott Rubinstein (Madison, CT), and Alec Josepher (Tampa, FL), juniors Adrien Bouchet (Oakton, VA) and James Spaulding (Winnetka, IL), and sophomores Hassan Kenawi (Katy, TX) and Rex Serituk (St. Louis, MO). Emory will see three of its freshmen make their debuts; Hayden Cassone (South Salem, NY), Will Wanner (Lancaster, PA) and Alec Rabinowitz (Marina del Ray, CA).
Emory will be looking to continue its success in singles at this weekend's competition as it has claimed 10 of the past 11 champions.
In doubles, Emory will field six teams with five in the Main Draw. The All-America duo of Rubinstein and Spaulding, owners of a 21-11 ledger a year ago, hold down the No. 1 seed and will open play at 2:00 pm on Friday. Other doubles teams in the main bracket include Bouchet/Wanner, the senior tandem of Max Renke and David Omsky, Serituk/Josepher and Jemison/Cassone. Kenawi and Rabinowitz will compete in the Gold Bracket of doubles.
Other schools taking part are: Belhaven, Centre, Covenant College, LaGrange College, Sewanee, North Carolina Wesleyan, Birmingham-Southern, Guilford, Methodist, Oglethorpe, Rhodes, Millsaps College, and Berry College.
