Results

The Emory University men's tennis team enjoyed an outstanding opening day of action on Friday at the ITA South Region Championships.  The Championships are being held at the Rome Tennis Center and hosted by Berry College.

Seven of the eight Eagles competing in the Main Singles Draw captured their opening two matches and have advanced to Saturday's Round of 16.  Senior Jonathan Jemison, the No. 1 seed, drew an opening-round bye and then proceeded to defeated Matthew Ko of Centre College, 6-0, 6-0.  Jemison will square off against Aditya Iyer of North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday in a scheduled 8:30 a.m. start. No. 2 seed Hayden Cassone moved into Saturday's action after bettering Maurico Gonzalez of Belhaven, 6-2, 6-1, and Mason Robb of Guilford, 6-0, 6-1.  Cassone's Round of 16 opponent will be Roberto Puig of North Carolina Wesleyan.   Senior James Spaulding registered a straight-set triumph against Elijah Gregory, 6-3, 6-0, in his opener before posting a 6-2, 6-3 verdict over Sean Hogan of Rhodes College.  Next up for Spaulding is a bout against No. 5 seed Andres Carro of Sewanee. No. 7 seed Adrien Bouchet notched a 6-2, 6-2, decision vs. Oglethorpe's Greyson Doscotch before taking down John Kimball of Millsaps, 6-0, 6-1. Bouchet will meet Brandon Kali in the Round of 16. Junior Rex Serituk, a singles finalist last year, topped Andrew Morton of Rhodes College, 6-2, 6-0, and Aubrey Davis of Sewanee, 6-1, 6-3, earning the right to move into a Saturday morning match against Logan Hull of Covenant College.

Two Emory freshmen came up with two wins as Antonio Mora played his way to a 6-1, 6-2, outcome against Adam Slone of Centre and a 7-5, 6-3, verdict against Walker Benson of Oglethorpe.  Mora will look to stay alive on Saturday when he matches up against No. 6 seed Ioannis Brokakis of NC Wesleyan.  Andrew Esses will face North Carolina Wesleyan's Nikita Revin on Saturday after upending Rhys Richardson (6-1, 6-2) and No. 3 seed Jack Gray of Sewanee (6-2, 6-2).   Sophomore Sahil Raina won his first match against Berry College's Ryan Miner, 6-4, 6-0, but came up short in the second round.

Emory was dominant in doubles with all four of its teams winning twice and advancing to the Main Draw quarterfinals. The tandem of Bouchet and Jemison looked strong, blanking the Birmingham Southern duo of Alex Wisener and Anthony Pellegrini, 8-0, and then earning an 8-1 triumph against Frank Stitch and Ryan Crump of Rhodes. The Emory pair will compete against Juan Vallejo and Jhonny Acosta of North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday in a scheduled 2:00 pm start.  Alec Rabinowitz and Serituk battled to a pair of successful results, 8-6 against Sewanee's Hayden Loeb and Aubrey Davis, and a 9-8 triumph over NC Wesleyan's Brokakis and Puig. Other Eagle doubles teams to advance included Spaulding and Cassone and the pair of Essess and Mora.

In the Singles B Draw, freshman Connor Genschaw, senior George Congdon and Rabinowitz all won twice to move into the quarterfinals of the 32-player competition.
