Emory Men's Tennis Defeats Wash U In Quarterfinals Of NCAA D-III Championships

The Emory men's tennis team made a successful in the 2019 NCAA D-III Championships on Monday, registering a quarterfinal-round victory over Washington University.  The No. 3-ranked Eagles won for the 16th straight time while raising their overall record to 20-2 following a 5-2 decision over the No. 7-ranked Bears who fell to 19-8. The Championships are being held in Kalamazoo, Michigan with Kalamazoo College serving as the host institution.

Emory used superb doubles play, sweeping all three matches in taking early command of the contest. At No. 2, senior James Spaulding and Will Wanner accounted for the initial point of the match with an 8-3 victory over Ethan Hillis and Benjamin vander Sman, boosting their season record to 17-5.   At first doubles, Emory's senior tandem of Jonathan Jemison and Adrien Bouchet raised their season mark to 26-5 with an 8-3 outcome against Konrad Kozlowski and Bernardo Neves. Sophomore Hayden Cassone and freshman Antonio Mora closed out the trifecta by battling to an 8-7 verdict against Daniel Li and Radha Vishnubhotla.

Wash U battled back to within 3-2 after capturing singles matches at the Nos. 6 and 2 positions.  However, a 6-3, 6-2 win by Mora, his 19th in 22 outings this season, at No. 4 against vander Sman put the Eagles one point shy of clinching, and freshman Andrew Esses did just that with a solid 6-3, 6-1 victory vs. Kozlowski at No. 5, which improved his overall record to 21-4.

Emory advances to Tuesday's semifinals where it will match-up against No. 6 Middlebury (19-6), with the start of that affair approximately 4:30 pm.
