Will Wanner Captures UAA Tennis Honor

Emory University senior Will Wanner has been selected by the University Athletic Association as Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week following his performance at the NCAA D-III Championships.  It marks the third time in his career that he has been recognized for the award.

Will Wanner helped the Emory men's tennis team to the program's sixth national title, going undefeated in both singles and doubles as the Eagles posted three wins en route to the national crown.

Teaming with Andrew Esses at No. 2 doubles, the pair landed the first point of the match, posting an 8-1 decision over the Brandeis duo of Colt Tegtmeier and Anupreeth Coramutla. At No. 3 singles, Wanner pushed Emory to a 4-0 and one point from clinching the match following a 6-1, 6-2 victory vs. Jeff Chen.

In a 5-0 win against Johns Hopkins in the semifnals, Wanner and Esses again registered the initial point with a decisive 8-1 triumph over Daniel Ardila and Arjun Askokumar. Later on, his 6-1, 6-1 win against James Yu at No. 4 singles provided the Eagles a 4-0 advantage.

In the national title match against Case Western, the Wanner/Esses tandem bested the Spartans' Chaitanya Arudu and Anthony Kanam, 8-4, with the result giving Emory a 2-0 lead. At four singles, Wanner came away with a 6-0, 6-4 decision over Arudu that staked Emory to a 4-2 lead, setting the stage for freshman Nolan Shah's clinching point at No. 6.

Wanner finished his collegiate career with a 48-13 mark in doubles and 15-7 in singles.
