Emory Men's Tennis Lands Two On All-UAA Team

Two members of the Emory University men's tennis team were named to the UAA All-Association Team as announced by the conference office on Tuesday morning.  The Eagles were crowned the 2021 NCAA Division III National Champions for the sixth time in program history, ending the year with a 10-3 won-lost slate.

Senior Will Wanner and junior Andrew Esses earned berths in singles while the Wanner/Esses tandem were recognized in doubles.

Esses logged his second career All-UAA singles selection after posting a 5-3 mark, 3-2 at the No. 2 slot and 2-0 at No. 3.  He won two singles encounter at the NCAA D-III Team Championships (one match unfinished), including a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Case Western Reserve's Matthew Chen in the title match, helping the Eagles to a 5-2 victory.

Wanner was solid in singles play, turning in a 7-4 record with his wins total topping the squad.  His play in that department was a catalyst in Emory's drive to the national crown, winning all three of his matches.  In the championship match vs. Case Western, he gave Emory a 4-2 advantage when he manufactured a 6-0, 6-4 outcome over Chaitanya Anduru at No. 4, which set the stage for Nolan Shah's match clincher.

In doubles, Esses and Wanner amassed a 6-0 record with all of their outcomes coming at No. 2.  The pair put on a dominating display during the NCAA Championships, dropping just six games while going 3-0.  After rolling to 8-1 triumphs against duos from Brandeis and Johns Hopkins in the NCAAs quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively, Wanner and Esses emerged with an 8-4 outcome against Case Western's Chaitanya Aduru and Anthony Kanam that gave Emory a 2-0 lead in the match.

Wanner finished his collegiate career with a 48-13 mark in doubles and 15-7 in singles.
