Athletes of the Week

(May 31) Emory University's T.J. Jennings attained All-America status (top-eight finish) in three events at the NCAA Division III national championships. His three All-America certificates broke a school record for the most earned at an NCAA national meet. Jennings was fourth in the 100-meter dash and sixth in the 200-meter dash. He also helped Emory finish fifth in the 4x100 relay. Thanks in part to Jennings, this is the first time an Emory relay has received All-America honors. The quartet was timed in 41.43 seconds in the preliminary heat, a season-best time and the third best in school history. Jennings ran a 10.76 in the preliminaries of the 100 dash, the fourth-best time in school history. Coupled with his school-record setting performance earlier this season, Jennings now owns five of the top six times in Emory history in the 100 dash. In additon to his All-America performances, Jennings was selected for the nationals in the long jump where he placed 11th.


(May 24) Emory University's Chris Nehls continued his quest for a third consecutive outdoor All-American citation in the 110-meter hurdles. Nehls finished third in the event at the North Central Invitational with a time of 14.47 seconds, the eighth-best time in school history. The senior owns the top 10 times in school history in the 110 hurdles. He has the third-best time in the nation this season in that event. Nehls' time last weekend was the ninth time this season he has surpassed the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the 110 hurdles.


(May 17) Emory University's Rob Leventhal competed in the 800-meter run on back-to -back days, first in Naperville, Ill, and then in Atlanta. Leventhal was timed in one minute and 53.60 seconds at the North Central Invitational and 1:54.78 at the Georgia Tech Invitational. No other individual in the South region has bettered those times this season, according to SouthRegionRunning.com. Leventhal already has qualified, provisionally, for the NCAA national championships and ranks 22nd in the nation this season in the 800 run.


(May 10) Euler Bropleh celebrated his graduation weekend in part by running the 110-meter hurdles at the Clemson Classic. The senior ran 14.88 seconds in the preliminaries which was good enough to advance to the finals where he ran a 14.98. Bropleh, the conference runner-up in the event, has the 22nd fastest time in the nation this season in the 110 hurdles. He graduates as the second-fastest individual in school history in the same event. Bropleh is one of four graduating seniors selected for the Bobby Jones Scholarship to study abroad in Scotland. The former president of the Emory student government, also received the department's McDonough Award as the athlete who best epitomizes the "Athletics for All" creed.


(April 26) T.J. Jennings was named the Most Outstanding Performer at the University Athletic Association Championships. He earned all-UAA honors in seven events and was the conference champion in four events. Jennings is the first Eagle runner to ever earn all-UAA honors in seven events at an indoor or outdoor conference championship. This was the third time Jennings received the Most Outstanding Performer award and the first time outdoors. Jennings won the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, long jump, and was a part of the conference champion 400-meter relay. He won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.5 seconds (hand-timed). His time of 21.60 seconds in the 200-meter dash is a career best. In field events, Jennings won the long jump with a jump of 7.21 meters (23 feet, 8 inches. In the high jump, Jennings finished second with a jump of 2.00 meters (6-6 3/4). In the triple jump, Jennings finished third with a jump of 13.13 meters (43-1). In relays, Jennings helped the conference champion 400-meter relay to a time of 41.58 seconds, breaking the UAA record and provisionally qualifying for the NCAA national championships. Jennings also ran a leg on the conference runner up 1600-meter relay team. Their time of 3 minutes and 17.95 seconds broke the conference and stadium records.


(April 19) Freshman Rob Leventhal finished first out of 53 mostly NCAA Division I runners in the 800-meter run at the Vanderbilt Invitational. His time of 1 minute and 53.22 seconds provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA national meet. The time is the best for an Emory freshman since 2000 and is the fifth fastest in Division III this season, according to Raceberryjam.com.


(April 12) T.J. Jennings finished first among Division III athletes in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes at the Charlotte Invitational. Jennings finished seventh overall out of 31 runners in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.81 seconds. This time is a career best and the second best individual time in school history. It also provisionally qualifies Jennings for the NCAA national meet. He finished tenth overall out of 41 runners in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.78 seconds. This time is the seventh best in Division III this season, according to Raceberryjam.com. Jennings also ran a leg on the 4 x 100-meter and 4 x 400-meter relays. The 4 x 100-meter relay team's time of 42.25 seconds is a season best and the second best in the South region this season, according to Southregionrunning.com. The 4 x 400-meter relay team's time of 3 minutes and 17.60 seconds is the best in the South region this season and missed provisionally qualifying for the NCAA national meet by just 0.10 seconds.


(April 5) Andrew Podgurski finished first among Division III runners in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the Duke Invitational. He finished 14th overall out of 38 mostly NCAA Division I and II runners. His time of 9 minutes and 37.15 seconds is a career best and makes him the fourth fastest individual in school history in this event. The time is also the best in the South region this season, according to Southregionrunning.com.


(March 29) Chris Nehls won the 110-meter hurdles and finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles at the Emory Classic. His time of 14.83 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA national meet. The time is the fifth best in the nation according to Raceberryjam.com and the best in the South region, according to Southregionrunning.com. His time of 55.59 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles is also the best in the South region. Nehls is a two-time All-American in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing fourth in the nation in 2001 and 2002.


(March 22) Seth Crislip led two Emory relay teams to top finishes among non-Division I schools at the Clemson Relays. In the 4 x 800-meter relay, Crislip ran a leg of one minute and 56.7 seconds, as the Eagles finished fourth in that event with a time of 8:01.35. That time is the third best in outdoor school history. In the 4 x 400-meter relay, Crislip ran a split of 49.8 seconds to help lead the Eagles to a fourth-place finish and a time of 3:23.01.


(March 15) Chris Nehls finished third in the 55-meter hurdles at the NCAA national meet with a season-best time of 7.60 seconds. This is the second consecutive year he has earned indoor All-American honors in this event. He is the third Eagle ever to attain All-American status at more than one NCAA indoor meet. His performance helped Emory finish 20th out of 55 teams at the meet, its best finish at nationals since 1994.


(March 8) Emory University senior T.J. Jennings was named the Most Outstanding Performer at the University Athletic Association indoor championships for the second time in his career. The other honor came last year. Jennings won the 55- and 200-meter dashes, finished second in the high jump, third in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump. He earned all-conference honors in four events. His season-best mark in the long jump ranks him 17th in the nation.


(March 1) Rob Bullard set a new indoor personal best in the high jump at the Clemson Invitational. His jump of 2.06 meters (6 feet, 9 inches) is the third best in indoor school history and the best for Emory since 1996. The jump is also the second best in the South region this season, according to Southregionrunning.com and the seventh best in the nation, according to Raceberryjam.com.
This is Bullard's fourth jump this season that provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA national meet.


(Feb. 23) T.J. Jennings finished second out of 12 competitors in the long jump at the University of Tennessee Invitational. Jennings was the top finisher from a college team in the event. His jump of 6.96 meters was the best in the South region this season, according to southregionrunning.com. The jump provisionally qualifies Jennings for the NCAA national indoor meet. He also finished 18th out of 49 competitors in the 55-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 6.66 seconds. This is the second best time in the South region in this event this season.


(Feb. 16) Josh Heiber finished first out of 12 competitors in the shot put at the second Sewanee Invitational. His throw of 14.41 meters was a career best and is the fourth best in the South region this season, according to Southregionrunning.com. The throw also sets a new indoor school record for the shot put, besting the old record by half of a meter.


(Feb. 9) Phil Hagedorn placed first out of 14 runners in the 5000-meter run at the Christopher Newport Invitational. His time of 15 minutes and 6.77 seconds is the best in the conference in this event this season and the fastest in the South region according to Southregionrunning.com. Last season, Hagedorn finished second in the 5000-meter run at the UAA Indoor Championships.


(Feb. 2) Senior T.J. Jennings won three events at the Sewanee Dual Meet. Jennings won the high jump with a jump of 6 feet and 6 inches (1.98m), the long jump with a jump of 22 feet and 4.5 inches (6.82m), and the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.69 seconds. Jennings' performances in all three events are among the top three in the South region this season.


(Jan. 26) Sophomore Rob Bullard placed first out of 12 competitors in the high jump at the East Tennessee State Invitational. His jump of 2.03 meters betters the NCAA provisional mark and is just shy of his career best jump of 2.05 meters. It was also the third best high jump in the nation this season. Last season, Bullard placed 15th in the high jump at the NCAA Division III indoor national championships.
