The Emory University men’s indoor track and field team,
led by University Athletic Association (UAA) Most Outstanding
Performer and NCAA Championship participant Ian
Francis, highlighted its 2012 campaign with a second-place
finish at the conference championship meet in February.
The Eagles scored 90 points during the UAA Championships, hosted by
New York University at the Armory Track and Field Center in New
York, NY, tying Carnegie Mellon University for second place, and
finishing behind only Washington University (Mo.), which won the
meet with 117 points scored. En route to being named the
conference’s Most Outstanding Performer in Field Events,
Francis, a senior, won both the long jump and the triple jump,
claiming the title in the latter with a UAA-record setting leap of
14.87 meters. It marked the 13th time that an
Emory men’s athlete has been named the UAA’s Most
Valuable Performer during the indoor season, and the first time an
Eagle has earned the honor specifically for his performance in
field events.
Francis would go on to qualify and compete in the triple jump at
the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, finishing
11th in the event with a leap of 14.05 meters.
Sophomore Scott Greathouse added Emory’s
final individual UAA Championship during the indoor season, winning
the high jump after clearing a height of 2.03 meters, tying him for
the seventh-best mark in the program’s history. Senior
Ben Euwer earned an all-UAA honor in the shot put
after finishing second in the event with a program-record throw of
14.77 meters in the event. Adding individual all-UAA honors
during the indoor season were sophomore Edward
Mulder in the mile run and senior Xavier
Fowler in the triple jump, each with second-place
finishes, and freshman Gui Silva in the 400-meter
dash and sophomore Mike Moserowitz in the triple
jump, who each claimed third-place in their events.
Emory’s distance medley relay team of Mulder, sophomore
Nick Cortellessa, freshman Patrick
Crews and junior Stephen Ellwood finished
second at the UAA Championships, while the 1,600-meter relay team
of junior Isaac Chambers, Francis, Silva and Crews
finished third, each earning all-UAA recognition.
Two other Emory records fell during the 2011-12 season, both at the
Orange and Purple Classic in December. Chambers set a new
program-best mark in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:07.51,
breaking his own previous school record in the event, set in
2009. Also at the meet, sophomore William
Matheson broke the school record in the 1,000-meter run
with a time of 2:40.72.
A number of Eagles were also recognized for their academic success
during the 2011-12 season. Highlighting that group were
senior Geraint Davies, Ellwood and Euwer, who were
each named to the Capital One/ CoSIDA Academic All-District First
Team during the season.
