Freshman Brett Henshey captured the University Athletic Association title in the high jump as the 2019 UAA Indoor Championships began Saturday afternoon on the campus of Brandeis University in Waltham, MA.
Henshey set a new personal record with his finals jump of 2.04m as he won the event title, one of three scoring marks for the Eagles on day one. His mark moved into fourth place on the Emory all-time list.
Emory will head into Sunday's slate of action in sixth place with 16 points. Carnegie Mellon is off to a strong start as they lead the field with 61 points.
The Distance Medley Relay of junior Alex Rand, sophomore Jacob Hedgepeth and freshmen Spencer Moore and William McGuire turned in a fourth place effort with their combined time of 10:19.83, the ninth fastest time in program history.
Sophomore Jack Whetstone added a scoring finish on Saturday, running a personal-best 14:59.04 to finish eighth in the 5000m Run.
In addition to the three scoring finishes, Emory saw performers qualify for the finals in the 60m Hurdles, 400m Dash, 800m Run and 200m Dash on the afternoon. Sophomore Liam Fost recorded the fastest preliminary time in the 400m at 49.37 while freshman Lucas Werner was sixth in the 60m Hurdles at 8.83. Fost added a qualifying time in the 200m at 22.88 (6th) ad did junior Fernando Cardozo (7th, 23.13). Sophomore Thomas Perretta (6th, 1:56.22) and freshman Jon Marcus (8th, 1:56.88) rounded out the event qualifiers for the Eagles, reaching the finals of the 800m Run.
Day two of the UAA Indoor Championships gets underway at 10:00 AM with the women's shot put and high jump as well as the men's triple jump. The meet concludes at 2:05pm with the women's 4x400m Relay followed by the men's race.
