The Emory University indoor track & field team competed in the first day of the Carolina Challenge on Friday in Columbia, SC with athletes on both the men's and women's team putting up impressive days.
For the women, sophomore Sarah Fineman set a new personal best distance in the shot put registering a 12.34m throw which was good for third at the meet and is the eighth farthest distance in program history. Graduate student Nyjah Willis had a solid performance in the weight throw recording a distance of 15.07m which landed her in fifth. Sophomore Alexandra Feurer turned in the best day of her young career clearing a height of 3.20m in the pole vault which marked a new personal best.
On the track for the women, sophomore Audrey Johnson, who also competed in the triple jump with a distance of 10.52m, blazed through the 60m dash with a time of 7.91 seconds which is the 35th fastest time of any individual in Division III so far this season according to TFRRS. Sophomore Dashiel Tao Harris paced the Eagles in the 200m dash as she crossed the finish line in a time of 59.66 seconds. Junior Julia Danko earned a bronze medal in the 5,000m run as she registered a time of 19:00.93.
For the men, graduate student Ethan Thompson won the 3,000m run, recording a time of 8:28.91 which is the fourth best time in program history and sits as the 15th best time in Division III to this point of the season according to TFRRS. Junior Spencer Watry set the top time for an Eagle in the 800m run this season with a 1:55.03 time on Friday that placed him third at the meet. The 4x400 relay team of senior Tommy Davis, junior Dawit Dean, freshman Bryce Wurster and Watry placed second at the Carolina Challenge notching a time of 3:22.42 which marks the 19th best time in Division III this season. Senior Justin Pecore had a solid day in the 1 mile run placing third after crossing the finish line in 4:19.78.
On the field for the men, junior Kenya Sei had a remarkable day tossing a distance of 14.91m in the weight throw to place fifth and marks his second time this season recording a top ten distance in program history this time placing ninth. Sophomore John Zhai competed in the long jump where he registered a distance of 6.57m to place 13th.
The Eagles are back in action tomorrow in Columbia, SC for the second and final day of the Carolina Challenge with events set to resume at 10:00 AM.
