The No. 23-ranked Emory men's cross country team turned in a stellar effort Saturday morning at the JSU Foothills Invitational, capturing first place in the Non-Division I portion of the competition. The meet was held at the Oxford Lake and Recreation Center in Oxford, Alabama.
The Eagles paced the 20-team field with 15 points, well ahead of runner-up Tennessee Wesleyan's 95 points. William Carey was third with 95 points while Piedmont College (126 pts.) and Valdosta State (152 pts.) rounded out the top five.
Emory claimed the top-five scoring positions, led by sophomore Marty Pimentel who clocked an 8k time of 26:09, his second-best career effort and good for fourth place out of 183 runners. Sophomore Luis Torres came through with a fine showing, finishing at 26:26.2 that ranked second among the pack and fifth overall. Junior Bennett Shaw crossed the finish line right behind Torres with a mark of 26:26.8. Rounding out the team's scorers were senior Shane Sullivan (8th place, 26:33) and sophomore Sam Branson (9th place, 26:44). All totaled, Emory claimed 11 of the top 18 overall finishers.
Emory returns to action on Saturday, October 14, when it will send representatives to the Cowbell Classic (Pre-Nationals) in Elsah, Illinois, and Berry Invitational.
