After a one-year hiatus, the No. 2-ranked Emory University
softball team is back in the NCAA Tournament. Earlier today,
the Eagles found out that they will be the No. 1 seed in the
eight-team Salisbury (MD) Regional.
The Eagles’ opening opponent will be No. 8 seed Kean
University from the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Emory and
the Cougars will open the Regional on Thursday at 10:00 a.m.
Other opening match-ups on Thursday include No. 4 seed Virginia
Wesleyan vs. No. 5 seed Christopher Newport (Noon), host and No. 3
seed Salisbury vs. No. 6 seed Farmingdale State University (2:00
p.m.) and No. 2 seed Rowan University vs. No. 7 seed Shenandoah
(4:00 p.m.). The double-elimination regional will run from
Thursday through the regional championship game on Sunday, May 15.
Game times will be 10 am, 12 pm, 2 pm, and 4 pm on the first
three days.
A total of 60 teams were selected to take part in this year’s
quest to bring home the national title which was captured by East
Texas Baptist in 2010. A total of 41 conferences received
automatic bids while Emory and fellow UAA member Washington
University drew Pool B bids which includes
independent institutions and institutions from conferences that do
not meet the automatic qualification criteria. The 17
remaining teams (Pool C) were selected on an at-large basis from
automatic qualifying conferences and the remaining institutions in
Pool B.
Some notes on the 2011 Emory squad as it enters the upcoming NCAA
Tournament.
** Emory has received NCAA Tournament bids in five of the past six
seasons and a total of nine times during the 13-year history of the
program.
** Head Coach Penny Siqueiros is the only head coach that Emory has
had since the Eagles launched play in 1999 and she posts a school
and career record of 410-135-1. She has guided Emory to nine
campaigns of 30 or more wins.
** This year’s team posts an overall record of 40-2-1 which
represents a school record for most wins during the regular season,
bettering the previous mark of 37.
** Emory has outscored the opposition by a 300-82 margin this year
with the Eagles’ run total third on the school’s
seasonal chart. The Eagles have scored 10 or more runs on 10
occasions this year. In addition, this year’s team has
established a school mark with 33 home runs, besting the previous
standard of 25 set by the 2009 squad.
** Emory opened the year by winning its first 26 contests,
registering a 198-27 scoring advantage in that stretch.
** Earlier in the campaign, Emory captured its second straight and
fifth University Athletic Association Championship, finishing with
an 8-0 record.
** Emory has won its last five and stands 8-2 in one-run games this
season.
** The Eagles show an all-time record of 21-11 in NCAA Regional
action. Emory’s last appearance in the regionals came
in 2009 when it finished with a 2-2 record at Salisbury.
** Freshman Megan Light, chosen as the UAA’s MVP and Rookie
of the Year, leads the team and the league in hitting with a .465
average, currently sixth on the school’s seasonal
ladder. She tops the team with 59 hits (t-9th on
school list), 59 RBIs (1st on school list), and 16
doubles (t-4th on school ladder). She has a
team-high 19 multi-hit games and has driven in two or more runs a
club-leading 16 times
** Junior outfielder Jessica Thomas, named Co-MVP of the UAA
Tournament with teammate Bridget Holloway, has hammered a school
record 11 homers this year. Thomas, a First Team All-UAA
honoree, has a dozen multi-hit outings and 14 multiple-RBI
performances. She is the school’s all-time leader with
23 round trippers and is eighth in career RBIs with 123.
** The pitching tandem of junior Bridget Holloway and freshman Lena
Brottman has accounted for 33 victories and 154 strikeouts in 225
innings of action. Holloway leads the Emory mound corps and
the UAA in victories with a 17-1 slate while Brottman is right
behind at 16-1. In NCAA statistics as of May 1, Holloway was
No. 2 nationally among D-III hurlers in fewest walks per 7 innings
(0.40) and her ERA of 1.25 is tied for the No. 2 spot in the UAA
and among the top 20 on the national scene. Brottman leads
the league with a classy 1.17 ERA and has fanned 98 batters in a
team-high 119 1/3 innings of action.
A look at the teams comprising the Salisbury Regional
Kean University (16-25)
** Earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after
winning the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship
** The Cougars are making their seventh appearance in the NCAA
tournament and third in the last four years.
** Margie Acker is in her 12th season as the head coach
at Kean University
** Kean enters the Salisbury Regional with wins in seven of its
last eight contests
** As a team, the Cougars are hitting .288 while opponents post a
.318 average
** Megan Cegielski paces the team with a .388 hitting mark
** Thursday’s meeting against Emory will represent the first
time the schools have met in softball
Christopher Newport University (31-10)
** Earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament
** A member of USA South, the Captains lost in the conference
championship game, snapping a 16-game winning streak
**CNU has earned five straight NCAA Tournament berths
** Keith Parr (CNU, 1999) is in his eighth year as head coach
** CNU is hitting .313 as a team while opponents show a .236
average .. The Captains have hit 41 homers, 14 by Jessie
Atkinson
** Emory holds a 1-0 edge in the all-time series with the lone
meeting coming in the 2009 Regional in Salisbury
Virginia Wesleyan College (29-9)
** Ranked 24th nationally
** Won the ODAC Tournament to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA
Tournament
** First trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1989
** Brandon Elliott (Virginia Wesleyan, 2003) is in his fourth year
as head coach
** The Marlins post a team batting average of .345 vs. their
opposition’s mark of .228
** Jaclyn Quinn is hitting .373 with 18 doubles
** All-time series with Emory stands deadlocked at 1-1. Emory
won the last meeting, 1-0, in March of 2006
Salisbury University (33-4)
** Ranked 10th nationally
** Earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning the
Capital Athletic Conference Championship
** Owns a 15-0 home record this year
** Enters the Regional on a 24-game win streak
** Margie Knight (Salisbury, 1979) is in her 15th year
as head coach
** The Sea Gulls are hitting a hefty .366 as a team while their
foes are just at .148
** Harley Hill is the team’s top hitter with a .440
average
** Emory holds a 3-2 edge in the all-time series – teams met
twice in the 2009 Salisbury Regional with Emory winning 5-4 in nine
innings and Salisbury, 8-0, in the second affair
Farmingdale State College (32-5)
** Earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after
winning the Skyline Conference Championship
** Will be making the program’s second trip to the NCAA
Tournament
** Starts play in the Salisbury Regional with victories in 15 of
its last 16 outings
** Chris Mooney (SUNY New Paltz) is in his ninth year as head
coach
** As a team, the Rams show a team hitting mark of .365 while
opponents register a .189 average
** Pitcher Hope Zino stands 20-1 on the year with an ERA of
1.20
