The Berry College Vikings (39-4) defeated the Maryville College Scots (31-14), 1-0, to win the NCAA D-III Atlanta Regional and advance to next weekend’s Super Regional. With the win, Berry earned its first ever trip to the Super Regional in program history.

Berry’s lone run came in the bottom of the third inning when Kayla Sangrey hit a solo home run, her fourth of the year, over the left field wall on a 1-2 pitch from Maryville’s Katlyn Smith.

The two starting pitchers turned in outstanding performances. Berry’s Kassie Howard scattered just five hits in the shutout win, with five strikeouts. The victory upper her season record to 25-1. Her counterpart Smith pitched a gem as well, giving up just the one run on two hits to a Berry team that entered the game hitting .376 on the year.

Maryville’s Alexus Murray represented the tying run in the top of the seventh after hitting ground ball single just over the glove of Berry shortstop Bayleigh Masterson with one out. But the Vikings were able to put away the next two batters, sealing the victory.
