The Emory softball team gears up for a busy stretch that will see it play eight road games over a four-day stretch.
The No. 23-ranked Eagles begin their road swing with a twinbill at William Peace on Monday (Mon. 12) with action starting at 1:00 pm. On Tuesday, Emory ventures to Randolph-Macon for a pair of contests before tangling with Christopher Newport in a doubleheader on Wednesday. Emory winds up their trip on Thursday with a pair of games against undefeated Virginia Wesleyan.
Emory starts the week with an overall record of 6-2 and will be resuming action for the first time since Feb. 24 when it captured both games of a double dip against Covenant College. The Eagles' pitching has been stellar thus far with the circle corps registering a total of five shutouts. Freshman Jacqueline Spizizen has crafted a 4-1 won-lost mark with an ERA of 1.25, hurling a team-high 28 innings and striking out 36 opposing batters while issuing eight walks. Offensively, junior center fielder Sarah Flanders is hitting at a .391 clip (9-23) and has scored a team-high six runs while junior shortstop Cassie Baca posts a .318 effort (7-22) at the plate.
William Peace stood 11-9 overall heading into a Sunday doubleheader against Salem College on Sunday. The Pacers saw a six-game winning streak halted on Saturday when they dropped both games of a doubleheader to Pfeiffer University.
Randolph-Macon, ranked 13th in the D-III ranks, is on a roll with wins in its last 11 games and the owners of an 11-1 effort. The Yellow Jackets bested both Manhattanville (11-2, 5 inn.) and Oswego (9-2) on Saturday.
No. 6 Christopher Newport is riding a five-game winning streak that has improved its record to 8-2. The Captains last played on March 4 in Tucson, Arizona, when they defeated Otterbein, 13-12, and East Texas Baptist, 15-9.
No. 1-ranked Virginia Wesleyan will host Emory with an unblemished record of 14-0. The 2017 D-III national champions, the Marlins last took the field on March 4 when they upended Rochester, 14-6, and Texas Lutheran, 5-0.
