Emory Softball Takes To The Road For UAA Series vs. Wash U

The Emory University softball team continues University Athletic Association play this Friday and Saturday (Apr. 6-7) when it travels to Washington University for a four-game series.  Friday's twinbill at the WU Softball Field is scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm (EDT) while Saturday's doubleheader is slated for a 2:00 pm (EDT) first pitch.

Emory heads into the weekend on a six-game winning streak that has boosted its overall slate to 13-7, 4-0 in the league.  The Eagles enjoyed a productive start to the conference portion of their schedule last weekend, sweeping a four-game set against Case Western Reserve. Freshman Jacqueline Spizizen was named the UAA Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season after figuring in all four decisions with three victories and one save. She tossed 14 1/3 innings and finished with an ERA of 0.49.  On the year, Spizizen has crafted an 8-4 won-lost mark with her 62 strikeouts over 60 innings tops in the conference.  The Eagles saw their bats wake up last weekend, compiling an impressive team hitting mark of .374 (37-99) with junior shortstop Cassie Baca leading the way with an effort of .600 (6 of 10) at the plate.

Junior Jenna Wilson, the owner of a seven-game hitting streak, paces the team with a .432 batting average (19 of 44), good for seventh place among the conference leaders. In addition, Wilson ranks second among UAA leaders with 12 stolen bases.  Baca is hitting at a .362 clip (21 of 58), 12th on the conference ladder, and paces the club in hits and RBIs (13).

Led by second-year head coach Michelle Venturella, Wash U heads into the Emory series with an overall mark of 6-6 (0-0 UAA).  The Bears have been stymied by the elements thus far, with eight games being cancelled due to poor weather. In its most recent action Wash U split a pair of home contests against the University of Chicago last Friday, dropping the opener by a 10-5 count before posting a five-inning, 9-0 triumph in the second game.  Junior shortstop Taylor Arends, a starter in all 12 games, tops the team's hitting chart with a .387 average while senior pitcher/infielder Maggie Clapp stands at  .355.  In the circle, senior Anna McKee checks in with a 4-2 record along with an ERA of 2.60 over 37 2/3 innings.

SCHEDULE NOTE – Emory has re-scheduled its doubleheader at Georgia Gwinnett, with those games taking place on April 25 at 5:00 and 7:00 pm.
