Emory Softball Takes Two From Brandeis

The Emory softball team ran its win streak to 12 games after sweeping a Friday afternoon doubleheader at Brandeis.  The Eagles registered a 2-0 victory in the opener before belting its way to a five-inning, 10-1 triumph in the finale.  Emory now stands 19-7 in overall action, 10-0 in the University Athletic Association while the Judges fell to 5-11 overall, 0-6 in the league

Junior Lana Herrmann was the hitting hero for Emory in the second game, socking a pair of home runs and totaling five RBIs.  Herrmann's first blast was a three-run shot in the top of the second and staked the Eagles to a 4-1 lead. After adding another run in the fourth, Emory exploded with a five-run fifth frame, with sophomore Greta Wilker knocking in the first three on a bases-loaded triple and Herrmann accounting for the final two with her second round tripper of the game and fourth of the season.  Senior hurler Audrey Weller was the beneficiary of the offensive barrage, raising her record to 2-1 after tossing the first four innings and giving up three hits while fanning three.

In the opener, the Eagles tacked up single runs in the fourth and seventh and used the masterful pitching of freshman Jacqueline Spizizen in earning the win in the first game of the series.  Spizizen went the distance, striking out a season-high 14 batters, tying the fourth-highest single-game mark in school history, while allowing five hits.   Jessy McLean collected two of Emory's four safeties, including a one-out double, her eighth two-bagger of the season, in the top of the seventh that scored Janelle Turnquest.  Sophomore Sarah Katz knocked in the club's other run with a two-out double in the fourth that plated Cassie Baca who opened the frame with a walk.

Emory and Brandeis close out the series with a doubleheader on Saturday that is scheduled to begin at noon.
