Emory Softball Takes Two From LaGrange

Emory Softball Takes Two From LaGrange

After playing its last eight games on the road, the Emory softball team made a successful return to its home field on Tuesday, sweeping a doubleheader against LaGrange College. The 20th-ranked Eagles raised their record to 22-8 following 4-0 and 2-1 victories over the Panthers who fell to 13-25.

Freshman pitcher Jacqueline Spizizen went the distance in the first game, allowing just a first-inning single and striking out 12 in boosting her won-lost ledger to 14-4. After giving up that hit, Spizizen retired 19 straight LaGrange hitters until two were out in the top of the seventh. Her strikeout total represented the third time this season she had reached double figures.  Junior outfielder Jenna Wilson picked up two of the Eagles' eight hits and singled in the team's first run of the game with a single that plated Ashley Powers.  In the bottom of the sixth, senior Janelle Turnquest gave Emory some breathing room with a two-run homer, her second round tripper of the campaign, that closed out the game's scoring.

In the nightcap, senior hurler Audrey Weller and Spizizen combined to limit the Panthers to just four hits.  Weller pocketed the win, her third in four decisions this season, drawing the starting nod and tossing 5 2/3 frames allowing one run and four hits.  Spizizen notched her third save of the year after going the final 1 1/3 innings and striking out three. Emory pushed across both of its runs in the bottom of the second, the first one coming when juniors Sam Vincent and Lana Herrmann executed a double steal, with Herrmann coming in from third while Vincent swiped second. After moving to third following a ground out, Vincent crossed the plate when junior shortstop Cassie Baca stroked out two-out double.

Emory returns to action on Tuesday (Apr. 19) when it plays a doubleheader at Piedmont College starting at 4:00 pm.
