Emory Softball Splits Doubleheader At Maryville

Freshman Mattie Ryan picked up three hits and drove in a pair of runs while junior Greta Wilker socked a three-run homer in helping the Emory softball team to a second-game win and a split of a doubleheader at Maryville College on Sunday.  The Eagles earned the split and evened their season record at 3-3 following an 8-3 triumph over the Scots.  Maryville posted a 2-1 victory in the opener.

Ryan knocked in the squad's initial run with a single in the first that scored senior Cassie Bassie.  After tacking on a run in its half of the third courtesy of a Sarah Katz single that scored Jenna Wilson, Emory used Wilker's three-run blast in the top of the sixth to bolt to a 5-0 cushion.  The Eagles tacked on three more runs in the seventh that saw Ryan deliver a run-producing double that allowed Natalie Arreguin to cross the plate.  Senior pitcher Toko Miller raised her season record to 2-0, tossing five innings of shutout ball that saw her surrender just two hits while striking out three.

In the opener, Arreguin's first career home run in the top of the second staked the Eagles to a 1-0 advantage.  However, the Scots accounted for both of their runs in the third frame and made those stand up as pitcher Katlyn Smith tossed a complete game, giving up seven Eagle hits, two of which came from Ryan, and striking out four.

Emory returns to action on Monday (Mar. 11) when it hosts the University of Rochester in a scheduled 2:30 pm start.
