Wilker & Schaefer Tabbed For UAA Softball Honors

Emory University's Greta Wilker (Belding, MI) and Madison Schaefer (Newton, MA) have been recognized by the University Athletic Association as the league's final Softball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week for the regular season. The duo helped the Eagles to a sweep of a doubleheader against No. 10-ranked Berry College on May 14.  It marks the first time in her career that Wilker has been recognized for the honor while it represents Schaefer's third nod.

Over the two games, Wilker hit .600 with three hits, including a pair of doubles, in five trips to the plate. She knocked in five of the team's seven runs and finished with a slugging percentage of 1.000 to go along with a .667 on-base percentage.

In the first game, a 3-2 Eagle triumph, Wilker delivered a two-out, two-strike double in the bottom of the first that plated Mattie Ryan and Page Nellis, staking Emory to a 2-0 lead. In the nightcap, Wilker delivered a pair of hits in three at-bats and drove in three runs as Emory prevailed over the Vikings by a 4-1 count. Wilker provided the Eagles a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first with another two-out two-bagger, scoring Sami Feller and Nellis, and then singled in Krista Colussi in the bottom of the fifth with the squad's final run.

Greta closed out the 2021 campaign hitting .343 (12-of-35) with a team-high four doubles and nine RBIs.

Schaefer figured in both of the Emory's wins, hurling a total of nine innings and registering an ERA of 1.56, allowing nine hits while striking out seven and issuing just one walk.

Schaefer notched her fifth complete game in six starts in the Eagles' 3-2 opening-game victory, giving up seven hits and fanning four. In the finale, she pocketed her first save of the year, tossing two scoreless frames that saw her strike out three. She came on in the top of the sixth and got out of a two-on, nobody-out jam, eventually striking the side.

On the season, Schaefer compiled a 7-0 won-lost record with an ERA of 2.39 over 55 2/3 innings of work. She struck out 47 batters and allowed just seven walks.  Career-wise, she rang up 32 wins, good for 10th place on the program's all-time chart.

Emory finished the season with a 9-2 won-lost record.
