Softball Places Four on All-UAA Team

The Emory University softball team landed four athletes on the 2022 All-University Athletic Association teams as announced by the league office Tuesday morning.

The Eagles landed three on the All-UAA second-team and had one additional member earn an honorable mention recognition. Seniors Mattie Ryan and Megan Weisenberg each earned their third All-UAA selections as both were named to the All-UAA second team along with graduate student Natalie Costero who was tabbed to her first All-UAA team. Fellow graduate student Allie Moberg earned the lone All-UAA honorable mention in the conference, representing her first conference honor.

Ryan had an exceptional season for the Eagles as she led the team in batting-average (.373), hits (41) and RBI (30). Ryan finished top six in the conference in nearly every major offensive category including hits (6th), doubles (2nd), home runs (3rd), batting-average (6th) and slugging percentage (3rd). Ryan, a four-year starter, also pitched for the Eagles this year and led the team in ERA (5.24) and strikeouts (58) while recording a UAA-leading 14 wins. Additionally, Ryan pitched three complete game shutouts in her first season as a full-time starting pitcher. In conference play, Ryan finished with 16 hits, six RBI, 11 runs and a batting-average of .271. Ryan earned three UAA Athlete of the Week honors over the course of the season, all for her efforts as a pitcher.

Weisenberg earned her third consecutive All-UAA accolade for her performance at the plate and in the field this season. Weisenberg, always near the top of the batting order, led the Eagles in runs with 33 and tied for the team lead in hits with 41. Once on base, Wesienberg proved to be a continuing threat as she paced the Eagles with nine steals and was caught once on the base paths all season. Weisenberg finished third in the UAA in runs and her on-base percentage of .456 was good for a fifth place conference finish. In conference action, Weisenberg finished the season with 23 hits, 12 runs, five RBI and a batting-average of .365. On top of these other impressive accolades, Wesienberg also finished second in the nation in total hit-by-pitches (12). She registered a statement game on her birthday in the first game of a doubleheader against Covenant (Mar. 11) when she went 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs and three RBI including a home run in the fourth inning that helped the Eagles earn the victory.

In her first season with the Eagles, Costero started all but two games for the Eagles and was a rock-solid force at the plate and in the infield for Emory all season. Costero finished the season fourth on the squad in hitting (.333) and third in total hits (32). Costero was a top-performer for the Eagles in conference games, pacing the team in on-base percentage (.450) and finished second in hits (18) and batting average (.353). One of Costero's best performances of the season came in the second game of a doubleheader against NYU (Apr. 15) in which she went 2-for-4 at the plate and contributed the go-ahead RBI in a tight 9-6 victory.

Moberg rejoined the team 10 games into the season and proved to be a pivotal member of the Eagles squad once she stepped back on the dirt. Moberg was instrumental to the Eagles performance in conference play as she paced the team in runs (13) and slugging percentage (.579) and helped the Eagles earn the win against the NYU Violets on April 15 with a three-RBI shot over the left field fence.

The Eagles concluded the regular season with an 18-20 overall record and went 7-13 across the UAA slate.
