Emory Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener To Rhodes College

Emory Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener To Rhodes College

Sophomore Erin Lindahl scored a career-high 21 points but it wasn't enough as the Emory women's basketball came out on the short end of its season-opening contest to Rhodes College Wednesday evening at the Woodruff PE Center.  The Lynx topped the Eagles by a 76-64 margin, dropping Emory's all-time record to 20-10 in season-opening contests.

Lindahl was one of three double-figure scorers for Emory, ending the evening connecting on seven-of-19 from the floor, including five treys in 11 attempts.  Junior Ashley Oldshue totaled 16 points while sophomore Allison Chernow led all reserves with 12 points, hitting four-of-nine from beyond the arc.

Rhodes was successful on 46.9 percent (30-64) of its field goal attempts, including 42.9 percent (6-14) from beyond the arc, while Emory finished with a 34.2 percent (25-73) effort from the field, 31 percent (9-29) from distance.  The Lynx held a 48-38 advantage on the glass with Oldshue leading the Eagles with nine caroms.  Sophomore Lindsey Tse dished over seven assists and grabbed eight rebounds.

Rhodes got out of the blocks quickly, sinking 11 of its first 14 field goal attempts in staking itself to a 27-13 lead late in the first quarter.  A three-pointer by Chernow followed by a jumper from Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod cut the Rhodes' advantage to nine points after the opening stanza.  Emory stayed within striking distance in the second quarter, drawing to within six points with 2:09 left in the half after a Chernow triple.  However, a 7-2 spurt by the Lynx over the final 1:41 pushed it to a 42-31 margin heading into the break.

With Lindahl scoring 11 points, sinking all three of her triple tries, the Eagles outpointed Rhodes by an 18-12 margin in the third frame.  The Eagles faced a 12-point obstacle with 6:46 left before closing out the quarter on a 15-8 charge, highlighted by a pair of Lindahl treys, which cut the deficit to five points at 54-49.  A 10-2 run that opened the fourth quarter gave the Lynx breathing room at 64-51 with 5:59 on the clock. The Eagles were slowed by converting just one of six field goal tries and a pair of turnovers in that stretch.  Emory mounted a comeback bid, scoring eight of the game's next nine points, capped by a Chernow three pointer, to slice the gap to six points with 3:31 remaining.  But, Rhodes kept Emory at bay, hitting eight-of-10 free throws over the final 1:12 to come away with the win.

Emory returns to action this Friday and Saturday (Nov. 17-18) when its hosts its Tipoff Tournament.  The Eagles will take on UT-Dallas on the first day of action in a 6:00 pm start.
