Oldshue Sparks Emory Women's Basketball Team To Win Over Belhaven

Junior Ashley Oldshue totaled game-highs with 24 points and 11 rebounds in leading the Emory women's basketball team to a win over Belhaven Saturday evening in the final day of its Tip Off Tournament. The Eagles raised their record to 2-1 following a 72-53 triumph over the Blazers who fell to 0-2.

Oldshue exploded for 18 points during the final two quarters of play, winding up the night hitting 11-of-15 field goal attempts, including one three-point field goal and one charity toss, en route to posting her second-highest career total.   Her 11 boards enabled her to claim her fifth career double-double.  Junior Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod and freshman Molly Weiss rounded out the team's double-digit scorers with 12 and 11 points, respectively.  Jackson-Sherrod was successful on six field goals in 12 opportunities while Weiss connected on four-of-six from the field, including a pair of triples.  Weiss also topped the team with three steals.  Sophomore Lindsey Tse dished out career-high tying 11 assists, tying the program's fifth-highest game total.

For the game, Emory sank 46.2 percent (30-65) of its field goal attempts compared to Belhaven's 37.5 percent (21-56).  Both squads registered six three-point goals in 16 attempts, but Emory did enjoy a 42-28 margin in rebounding.

After the Blazers trailed by just eight points at the break, Emory turned the pressure up over the final two quarters, draining 56.7 percent (17-30) from the floor to Belhaven's 42.3 percent (11-26) and  outpointing them by a 38-27 margin.

Holding a 42-33 margin early in the third stanza, a 14-4 burst, which saw Weiss score five straight points and Oldshue come through with a pair of buckets, stretched the Eagles to a 56-37 lead with just under a minute left.  The Blazers did score the quarter's last five points to cut its deficit to 14 entering the final 10 minutes of action.   Fueled by nine points from Oldshue, an 11-2 Eagle blitz to open the fourth quarter put the game out of reach at 67-44 with 6:37 on the clock.  Emory was able to keep its lead in the 20s until 43 ticks remaining when the Blazers' hit a pair of free throws to close out the game's scoring.

Emory will play its next two games on the road, starting with a Tuesday evening (Nov. 21) contest at Covenant College.
