Junior Ashley Oldshue established career highs with 28 points and 17 rebounds in sparking the Emory women's basketball team to a Friday evening win at home over Carnegie Mellon University. The Eagles upped their overall record to 7-6 (1-1 UAA) following a 68-62 decision over the Tartans who slipped to 9-4 overall, 1-1 in the UAA.
Oldshue scored seven timely points in the final quarter of action, her final two coming on a pair of free throws with 1:42 on the clock that snapped a 62-62 deadlock, giving the Eagles the lead for good. Earlier in the frame, an Oldshue bucket with 3:41 on the clock had knotted the score at 62 apiece. She ended the night converting eight-of-12 from the floor and 12-of-14 free throw attempts in registering her 10th double-figure scoring performance of the season in 11 outings. Her 17 boards tied the program's 10th-highest individual total and enabled her to post her fifth double-double of the campaign. Oldshue finished with 10 offensive boards, helping the Eagles generate a 14-2 cushion in second-chance points.
Junior Azzaiaria Jackson-Sherrod tacked up 14 points, sinking seven field goals in 14 attempts, and also contributed nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Freshman Lynn Johnson added nine points while sophomore Lindsey Tse doled out six assists.
A basket by the Eagles' Safiya Dzotsi provided Emoy with a 56-50 edge early in the fourth quarter, but an 8-1 Tartan spurt moved the visitors to a 58-57 lead with 6:33 remaining. A pair of Oldshue charity tosses, allowed Emory to regain the lead, but CMU's Makayla Filiere gave the lead back to the Tartans at 60-59 with 5:12 left. After Emory tied the score, the Tartans' registered both their final lead and points of the contest with 4:04 remaining when Victoria Avery hit a jumper. Over the duration of that stretch, CMU misfired on six field goal attempts and turned the ball over on three occasions.
The Tartans shot 44.6 percent (25-56) from the floor while the Eagles finished at 35.9 percent (23-64). Emory closed out the night with a 49-26 bulge in rebounding, 24-7 on the offensive end of the floor. The Eagles were successful on a season-high 86.4 percent (19-22) from the charity stripe with the Tartans a solid 76.9 percent (10-13) on their attempts.
Emory got out of the blocks quickly, hitting six of its first 10 field goal attempts, including a pair of triples by Johnson, to claim a 14-4 lead with 5:22 left in the first quarter. A bucket by Oldshue gave the Eagles another 10-point advantage with 2:25 left before the Tartans closed the gap to eight points, 19-11, at the end of the opening stanza. Jackson-Sherrod picked up eight of her 10 first-half points in the second quarter, including a bucket with three seconds left that gave Emory a 36-30 edge heading into halftime. Oldshue totaled four points and went into the break with 13 points, converting all five of her field goal attempts and three-of-four from the stripe. Johnson chipped in nine points on the strength of three triples.
Emory returns to action on Sunday (Jan. 14) when it hosts Case Western in a 2:00 pm start.
