Emory Women's Basketball Tops Case Western Reserve

Emory Women's Basketball Tops Case Western Reserve

Junior Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod and freshman Lynn Johnson combined for 29 points in leading the Emory women's basketball team to a Sunday win at home over Case Western Reserve.  The Eagles won their second straight game and improved to 8-6 overall, 2-1 in the University Athletic Association, following a 64-47 outcome over the Spartans who dipped to 3-10, 0-3 in the league.

Jackson-Sherrod topped all players with 16 points, her eighth straight and 12th double-figure outing of the season, ending the game sinking eight-of-14 field goal attempts.  In addition, she contributed six rebounds and a career-best five blocked shots, the high-water mark by an Emory player this season.  Johnson, making her second straight start, came through with a season-high 13 points, converting four three-point field goals in 10 attempts and one from the stripe.   Sophomore Lindsey Tse tied her career high with 11 assists.

After Case Western took a 14-11 lead after the opening 10 minutes of action, the game was knotted up at 21-21 with 5:12 left in the first half after a bucket by the Spartans' Emily Todd.  However, Emory took advantage of a cold shooting stretch by the Spartans that saw the visitors miss eight straight field goal opportunities, scoring 12 unanswered points, ignited by a Johnson three-pointer and further fueled by four points from Jackson-Sherrod to post a 33-21 lead.  A Case bucket in the waning moments cut the Eagles' lead to 10 points at the break.   Both Jackson-Sherrod and Johnson picked up 10 points for Emory over the first two quarters, with the Eagles shooting at a 42.2 percent clip (14-32) compared to CWRU's 27 percent (10-31).

The Eagles kept the pressure on in the third quarter, using an 8-0 run over a 4:30 stretch, which saw four different players hit baskets, giving them a 43-25 bulge with 3:56 left. The Eagles eventually built a 21-point cushion before ending the frame ahead by a 50-31 count.  Johnson's last three-pointer of the game with 6:54 left in the final quarter gave Emory its largest lead of the contest, 56-33.

For the game, Emory was successful on 42.2 percent (27-64) from the floor while the Spartans converted just 27 percent (17-63), an Emory opponent low on the year.  The Eagles held a 44-40 edge in rebounding with sophomore Erin Lindahl recording picking up eight boards.

Emory returns to action on Friday (Jan. 19) when it plays at New York University in a scheduled 6:00 pm start.
