Emory Women's Basketball Defeated By Washington University

Junior Ashley Oldshue led four double-figure scorers with 18 points but it wasn't enough as the Emory women's basketball team dropped a Sunday afternoon contest at Washington University.  The Bears upped their overall slate to 15-5, 6-3 in the University Athletic Association, following a 75-63 verdict over the Eagles who slipped to 10-10 in overall play, 4-5 in the league.

Oldshue, who rang up 14 second-half points, closed out the contest six-of-13 from the field and six-of-seven from the charity stripe in notching her 14th double-digit effort of the campaign in 18 appearances. Freshman Blair Ripley tied her season high with 13 points, her fifth showing with double figures, while sophomores Lindsey Tse and Erin Lindahl chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively.  Oldshue and Ripley tied for team honors with nine rebounds while Tse doled out seven assists.

Staring at a 17-point obstacle to open the second half, the Eagles scrapped their way back into contention by outscoring the Bears by an 18-9 margin in the third quarter. Ripley scored seven points in the frame, while a runner by sophomore Allison Chernow drew the Eagles to within six points, 48-42, with 1:50 left in the stanza.  Emory connected on 50 percent (7-14) of its field goal tries in the quarter while the Bears converted just three-of-15 opportunities.  The Bears scored the first five points of the final quarter, increasing their cushion to 13 points before a layup by Oldshue drew Emory to within 10 points with 5:07 on the clock.  Holding a 62-52 lead, four straight points by Kristinia Schmelter, who tallied 18 points on the day, upped the Bears' lead to an insurmountable 66-52 margin with 2:05 left.

WU connected on 43.6 percent (24-55) of its field goal attempts compared to Emory's 34.4 percent (23-67). The Bears were effective from beyond the arc, knocking down six-of-11 from distance while the Eagles finished with four makes in 14 opportunities.  Emory closed out the game with a 42-38 edge in rebounding.

Wash U held a 41-24 lead heading into halftime.  It was a tale of two different shooting performances as the Bears shot 55.6 percent (15-27) from the floor compared to the Eagles' 30.6 percent (11-36).  WU made the most of their three-point shot attempts, hitting four-of-five from distance while the Eagles were just one-of-seven.  A 9-0 run by the Bears gave them an 11-2 edge early in the first quarter, and they would lead by as many as 16 points, 22-6, with 1:37 on the clock.  The Eagles battled back and scored the final eight points of the frame, six by Tse, to trail by a 22-14 count. A bucket by junior Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod allowed Emory to narrow the score to 24-18 early in the second stanza, but WU capitalized on the Eagles missing five straight field goal attempts and three turnovers, scoring nine unanswered points over a four-minute span to move to a 33-15 lead with 3:26 in the half.

Emory returns to action on Friday (Feb. 9) when it plays at Carnegie Mellon in a 6:00 pm start.
