Emory Women's Basketball Comes Up Short vs. NYU

Emory Women's Basketball Comes Up Short vs. NYU

Junior Ashley Oldshue totaled a team-high 17 points and classmate Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod added 12 points and eight rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Emory women's basketball team fell to New York University Friday evening in a game played at the Woodruff PE Center.  The Eagles fell to 12-11 in overall action, 6-6 in the University Athletic Association, after dropping a 63-58 outcome to the Violets who improved to 14-9 overall, 7-5 in the league.

Oldshue ended the evening sinking six-of-nine from the floor and all four of her attempts from the foul line in registering her 17th double-figure scoring effort of the year.  After foul trouble limited her time in the opening half, Oldshue scored all of her points over the final two quarters of action. Jackson-Sherrod converted six field goals in 13 tries in chalking up her 18th double-digit contest of the campaign.  Sophomore Erin Lindahl chipped in 11 points and three steals.

Emory saw NYU roll to a 9-2 lead with just a shade under six minutes left in the first quarter before closing out the final 5:15 of the frame on a 15-5 run, keyed by sophomore Hazel Carmona who scored all seven of her points in that stretch, in taking a 17-14 lead. After a bucket by Jackson-Sherrod opened the second quarter, NYU used five straight points by Olivia Linebarger to knot the score.  After a basket by Lindahl allowed Emory to regain the lead at 21-19, NYU outpointed the Eagles by a 10-2 margin over the final 6:11 of the frame to take a 29-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.  Kaitlyn Read scored seven points for NYU in that stretch and would close out the contest with a game-high 22 points.

NYU opened the third stanza on a 7-0 spurt, the final three points coming on a three-pointer by Linebarger, to move to a 36-23 edge.  Facing an 11-point obstacle, the Eagles tallied six straight points, four by Oldshue, to draw to within five points with 5:43 remaining.   A jumper by Oldshue kept the Eagles with five, 44-39, with 51 ticks left in the quarter before Read hit a triple with one second left to give the visitors an eight-edge heading into the final 10 minutes.  A three-pointer by Read allowed the Violets to lead by a 55-44 count with 5:44 left in the game, but seven straight points by Emory sliced the deficit to four points with 2:56 on the clock. The Eagles would trail by four points on two more occasions, the final time with 1:04 left after an Oldshue basket.  NYU was able to build its lead back to eight points late before a three-pointer by Oldshue with two ticks left closed out the game's scoring.

Emory outshot NYU, hitting 45.8 percent (22-48) of its field goal attempts compared to the Violets' 43.4 percent (23-53).  NYU finished with a slim 33-30 edge in rebounding.

Emory returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 18) when it closes out its home schedule with a 2:00  pm contest vs. Brandeis.
