Emory Women's Basketball Tops Brandeis

Emory Women's Basketball Tops Brandeis

Junior Ashley Oldshue and sophomore Erin Lindahl each scored 14 points and combined  for 17 rebounds in helping the Emory women's basketball team to a Sunday afternoon win at home over Brandeis.   The Eagles assured themselves of finishing with a winning record for the sixth time in the past seven campaigns after coming way a 57-50 triumph over the Judges, which raised their overall ledger to 13-11, 7-6 in the University Athletic Association.  The loss dopped Brandeis' overall record to 12-11, 4-9 in the conference.

In addition to Oldshue's point total, her fifth straight and 18th double-figure effort of the year, she grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the year.  Lindahl, who sank five-of-13 field goal attempts, including three triples, finished with seven rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Allison Chernow came off the bench to pace all reserves with 12 points, all of which came over the final two quarters.

Emory outscored the Judges, 31-20, over the last two stanzas, starting with a 13-5 edge in the third quarter followed by an 18-15 count in the final frame. After a bucket by BU's Camila Casanueva opened the scoring in the third quarter, pushing Brandeis to a six-point lead, the Eagles closed out the final 6:57 with a 13-3 run, keyed by six points from junior Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod and five from Chernow.  Emory's defense came through with a stout effort, holding Brandeis to just 11.8 percent (2-17) from the field in that quarter. A triple by Chernow gave Emory a five-point advantage, 42-37, early in the fourth quarter, but the Judges battled back to within one point with 6:25 on the clock after a three pointer by Noel Hodges.  The Eagles took advantage of the Judges missing their next four field opportunities and used a bucket by Lindahl, two free throws by Oldshue and a make at the stripe by Lindsey Tse to claim a 48-42 edge with 2:58 remaining.  After a BU trey sliced Emory's lead in half, Chernow upped it back to six, 51-45, with a three-pointer.   Emory took a 53-46 lead with 1:17 on the clock after Jackson-Sherrod hit a jumper, but Brandeis kept its hopes alive after a basket with 18 seconds cut Emory's lead to four.  Oldshue then sealed the outcome with two free throws with 14 ticks on the clock.

For the game Brandeis outshot Emory by a slim margin, 32.3 percent (20-62) to 31.3 percent (20-64), but the Eagles chalked up a decisive 51-34 bulge in rebounding.  Both teams finished with nine turnovers, with Emory having just one miscue over the final two quarters.

Emory's seven wins in league play is the highest total since 2013 when that club fashioned a 12-2 mark.

Emory closes out the year next Saturday (Feb. 24) when it plays at Rochester.
