Women's Basketball Routs Virginia Wesleyan by 27 for First Win

The Emory University Women's Basketball team earned its first win of the 2018-19 season Saturday afternoon, routing Virginia Wesleyan to the tune of 64-37 on the first day of the Daly 7 Classic at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The Eagles jumped out to the early lead, 14-1 after the first quarter, and never looked back for the wire-to-wire, 27-point victory. Emory led by as many as 35 points as it improved to 1-1 while VWU dropped to 0-3.

The Eagles held the Marlins without a successful field goal until the 7:55 mark of the second quarter and limited Virginia Wesleyan to a shooting percentage of 18.8% (9-for-48) for the contest. The Eagles as a unit, shot at a 39.3-percent clip (22-for-56) and outrebounded VWU by a 44-32 margin.

Senior Ashley Oldshue paced all scorers with a game-high 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting in 18 minutes to go along with five rebounds and two blocks. Sophomore Blair Ripley logged nine points in 11 minutes off the bench while senior Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod collected eight boards to lead both teams and chipped in with eight points in 17 minutes. Junior Allison Chernow doled out five assists with junior Lindsey Tse adding four dimes. For the Marlins, Amanda Gerni secured eight points and six rebounds while Jayla Harris and Jaelyn Washington each posted seven points.

Emory closes out the Daly 7 Classic on Sunday with a matchup against host Guilford College with tip-off set for 2:00 PM.
