Senior Ashley Oldshue led three double-figure scorers with 16 points in helping the Emory women's basketball team to a New Year's Day win at Maryville College. The Eagles won for the seventh straight time and raised their overall record to 9-2 following a 68-52 decision over the Scots who slipped to 4-8.
Emory used a strong second-half performance in the victory, outscoring Maryville by a 40-25 margin and shooting 55.6 percent (15-of-27) from the floor. Oldshue ended the contest connecting on seven-of-11 from the floor and two-of-three from the stripe in registering her seventh straight and 10th double-figure scoring effort of the season. Senior Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod and sophomore Molly Weiss each contributed 13 points, with Weiss hitting five field goals in seven tries including three treys.
Emory registered a 19-9 third-quarter scoring advantage that gave it a 47-36 cushion heading into the final stanza. A decisive 17-3 blitz over a five-minute stretch erased a three-point deficit and gave the Eagles a 45-34 bulge with 2:13 left. Oldshue totaled eight points in the stanza while junior Allison Chernow and Jackson-Sherrod added five and four points, respectively. Emory kept the pressure on during the early stages of the fourth quarter with a 9-3 spurt, highlighted by a triple from junior Chernow and back-to-back buckets from Jackson-Sherrod, to claim a 56-39 lead with 7:17 left in the contest.
For the game, Emory was successful on 41.7 percent (25-of-60) from the field compared to Maryville's showing of 37.3 percent (19-of-51). The Scots hit 41.7 percent (5-of-12) from three-point range to Emory's 35 percent (7-of-20), but the Eagles did post a 42-32 edge in rebounding with sophomore Blair Ripley topping all players with a career-high 14 boards, the high-water mark by an Emory player this season.
In a closely played opening half, Emory took a 28-27 lead into the locker room at the break. The Eagles trailed by a 21-17 margin midway through the second stanza but outscored the Scots by an 11-6 count over the final 5:33 to take the one-point advantage. Weiss knocked down back-to-back triples to push Emory ahead, 23-21, while a three-point play by Jackson-Sherrod with 33 ticks on the clock closed out the scoring for quarter. Emory hit just 30.3 percent (10-of-33) of its field goal attempts while MC was successful on 33.3 percent (9-of-27). Weiss paced the Emory scoring effort, tallying 11 points on four-of-six field goal shooting including three-of-five from beyond the arc.
Emory returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 5) when it opens University Athletic Association play at Rochester.
