Emory Women's Basketball Takes To The Road For UAA Games vs. Wash U & Chicago

GAME FACTS – The Emory women's basketball team packs its bags for the second straight weekend when it travels Washington University for a Friday (Jan. 11) night contest followed by a Sunday afternoon tilt against Chicago.  The WU Field House will serve as the venue for the 60th meeting between the Eagles and Bears with tip at 7:00 pm (EST).  The Ratner Center on the Chicago campus will serve as the site of the 60th confrontation between the two schools and that game is scheduled to start at approximately 3:00 pm.

THE COACHES – Head Coach Misha Jackson (Emory, '13) is in her second season at the helm of the Eagles' program.  Named Interim Head Coach in October of 2017, she guided the Eagles to a 13-12 slate last season, which included a 7-7 mark in University Athletic Association play, the highest win total in league play since 2013. She then had the Interim tag removed in March of this year.

She enters this weekend with a school and career mark of 23-14.

Jackson joined the Eagles' staff as an assistant prior to the start of the 2013-14 season.  She played three seasons in an Eagle uniform (2010-11 through 2012-13), seeing action in a total of 78 games, 69 in a starting capacity. She closed out career ranked among the program's top-10 all-time performers in 11 categories.

Jackson is assisted by Sammi Goldsmith and Chuck Melito.

Randi Henderson (Iowa, '01) is in her second year as the head coach of the Wash U program and posts a school ledger of 26-13. In 12 seasons as a head coach, which includes a nine-year run (2006-07 through 2014-15) at Coe College and a one-year stint at Minnesota-Morris, Henderson has compiled a career mark of 197-114.

In her seventh campaign of patrolling the Chicago sideline is Carissa Sain.  Heading into a Friday evening contest against Rochester, Sain logs a school and career ledger of 108-58, which includes a pair of UAA titles and three berths to the NCAA D-III Tournament.

2018-19 RECORDS – Emory has won its last eight games, boosting its record to 10-2 (1-0 UAA). The Eagles were victorious in their conference opener last weekend, topping on the road Rochester by a 70-52 margin.  Senior Ashley Oldshue paced the team's scoring efforts with 18 points while junior Allison Chernow and sophomore Blair Ripley each contributed 15 points.  Ripley also led all players with 10 rebounds in registering her first career double-double.

Emory is 3-1 at home and 7-1 in road/neutral contests.

Wash U will square off against Emory with an overall record of 7-5(1-0 UAA).  The Bears recorded an impressive win in their conference opener last weekend, posting an 85-66 triumph at then No. 8 Chicago.  WU stands 3-2 in home games and is 4-3 in road/neutral outings.

Chicago, ranked 17th in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, starts the weekend looking to snap a two-game losing streak that has left its record at 9-3 (0-1 UAA).  The Maroons check in with a 3-2 mark in home dates and 6-1 in road/neutral outings.

SERIES RECORDS – In a series that saw the first game played on Feb. 17, 1989, Wash U holds an all-time record of 53-6 vs. Emory.  The Bears have won the last 12 contests between the schools.

The series between Emory and Chicago also has its roots in February of 1989 with the Maroons holding the upper hand by a 39-20 margin. UC has captured the last three and seven of the last nine games. In games played on their home court, the Maroons are 21-8 vs. Emory.

EMORY TRIO TO SERVE AS CAPTAINS – Serving as captains of the 2018-19 Emory women's basketball team are senior Ashley Oldshue (Glenview, IL), and juniors Lindsey Tse (Calabasas, CA) and Erin Lindahl (Yardley, PA).

EMORY DEFENSE STINGY – Heading into the Wash U game, Emory has held seven opponents to 55 or fewer and five to 50 or fewer points.  The Eagles hold down the No. 1 spot in the UAA and rank 53rd in the D-III ranks (through Jan. 8) in scoring defense at 53.8 points per game.

In addition to that statistic, Emory is second in the conference in field goal percentage defense (.336).  

EAGLES SHARP AT THE STRIPE – Emory has been consistent from the foul line this season, converting 70 percent or better of its free throw opportunities in nine contests (7 games of 80 percent or higher). The Eagles are connecting at a 76.6 percent (151-of-197) clip, good for the No. 2 spot in the UAA. In last Saturday's win at Rochester, Emory was successful on 86.7 percent (13-of-15) from the charity stripe.

Allison Chernow stands as the team's top marksman from the foul line, connecting on 89.1 percent (41-of-46) of her attempts, good for fourth place on the UAA ladder. Ashley Oldshue is three spots behind Chernow at 80.6 percent (50-of-62).

THREE-POINT SHOOTING PICKING UP – After shooting just 28.5 percent (26-of-91) from three-point range in its first five contests, Emory has improved over the next seven games, hitting at a 38.2 percent (39-of-102) clip.  The Eagles closed out the Rochester game with a 50 percent (5-of-10) performance from distance, their second-highest mark of the season.

Emory is tied for first among UAA squads with a 33.7 percent showing (65-of-193) from beyond the arc.

EMORY STRONG IN THE SECOND HALF – The Eagles have outscored 10 opponents over the second half of play this year, six of those by 10 or more points.  Over the last five outings, Emory posts an 188-128 (37.6-25.6) scoring advantage over the final two quarters of action.   In those last five contests, the Eagles have shot 49.3 percent (71-of-144) from the field in the second half vs. 34 percent (51-of-150) for the opposition.

OLDSHUE REACHES 1,000 CAREER-POINT PLATEAUAshley Oldshue became the 10th player in program history to reach 1,000 points in a career when she finished the Agnes Scott contest with a game-high 14 points.

Needing nine points to reach 1,000, Oldshue joined that exclusive club when she converted a bucket with 7:15 in the second quarter.  She closed out the night seven-of-11 from the floor.

Career-wise, she stands 10th on the school's all-time scoring derby with 1,067 points, three shy of tying Lynn Oberschmidt (2002-06) for the No. 9 spot.

RIPLEY GIVES BOOST OFF THE BENCH– Sophomore Blair Ripley continued her productive and timely play in the Rochester contest, coming through with her first career double-double that saw her post a career-high 15 points along with a game-high 10 rebounds that represented her second career double-figure performance in that category. Ripley sank six-of-eight field goal attempts, including her lone triple try, and went two-of-two from the stripe in chalking up her third double-figure scoring performance of the season.

Ripley has come off the bench in all 12 games and is averaging 17.4 minutes, 7.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per stint.  She is shooting 50 percent (34-of-68) from the field and has knocked down six-of-11 from beyond the arc.   She is second on the team with 12 blocked shots and has grabbed six or more boards on six occasions, leading or sharing for team honors in that department four times.  Ripley grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds in a 68-52 victory Maryville College (Jan. 1), the high-water mark by an Emory player this year.

OLDSHUE CONTINUES CONSISTENCYAshley Oldshue starts weekend game having scored in double figures in her last eight and in a total of 11 contests. Oldshue tops the club in scoring with a 16.7 points-per-game average, good for the No. 2 spot on the UAA ladder, and her team-high 59.1 percent showing from the field (75-of-127) paces the league and ranks 15th in D-III (through Jan. 8).  Oldshue has converted 50 percent or better from the floor in nine contests and is shooting 65.3 percent (32-of-49) over her last four games.

In addition to her scoring and field goal percentage rankings, Oldshue also finds herself among the UAA's top 10 in rebounding (6th, 7.3 rpg), free throw percentage (7th, .806), blocked shots (1st, 2.4 bpg) and offensive rebounds (t-5th, 2.7 orpg).

Career-wise, Oldshue has produced 56 double-figure scoring contests and has 14 performances of 20 or more points to her credit, most recently a career-high tying 28 in the win over Rhodes (Dec. 29).  She 535 rebounds and stands 13th on the school's all-time ladder in that category.  Ashley is climbing up the program's career ladder for free throws with 267 makes at the stripe, good for fourth place.  Finally, in the win over Maryville, she moved past her coach, Misha Jackson, and into the No. 2 position on the Eagles' career chart with 97 blocked shots (Alicia Moore is first with 104).

TSE DIRECTS EMORY OFFENSE
Lindsey Tse has guided the Emory offense with a steady hand this year, ranking first in the UAA and seventh in the D-III ranks with an average of 6.6 assists per game. Tse has dished out seven or more assists on five occasions this year including a career-high tying 11 vs. Birmingham Southern back on Dec. 8.  Tse also sits atop all D-III players with a 5.6 assist/turnover ratio.

Tse has moved into 4th place on Emory's career chart with 342 assists and her 5.52 per-game average ranks as the No. 1 mark in school history.

NOTES – In addition to her game-high seven assists in the Rochester game, Lindsey Tse ranked second on the club with a career-high tying eight rebounds … Emory's 10-2 record ties the program's third-best 12-game start in school history with the 2013-14 (12-0) and 2012-13 (11-1)) squads holding the top-two marks … Allison Chernow is No. 2 on the team and 10th among UAA players in scoring average (12.8 ppg) … Chernow's 15 points against Rochester represented her fifth double-digit outing of the campaign, and her two three-point field goals marked the sixth time this year that she finished with multiple treys to her credit … Senior Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod has six games this season (30 in her career) with 10 or more points … Jackson-Sherrod is 11th among UAA cagers in field goal percentage (.440, 48-of-109) … The Eagles have outshot their last 11 opponents from the floor … Emory has outrebounded eight foes, seven by 10 or more boards … The Eagles are third in the league in rebound margin (+6.8) … Nine of Emory's wins have been by 10 or more points and it is No. 1 in the UAA and 30th nationally in scoring margin (+16.6) …The Eagles are doling out a conference-best tying 17.1 assists per game, with that effort ranking 24th among all D-III programs (through Jan. 2) …  Emory reserves have scored 20 or more points on seven occasions … Junior Erin Lindahl has produced double-figure scoring in five games this year (27 in her career) … Allison Chernow has drained a team-high 24 three-point field goals and her 40.7 percent (24-of-59) from beyond the is second in the UAA and 64th nationally.
