Emory Women's Basketball Preps For Brandeis and NYU Road Games

GAME FACTS – The Emory women's basketball team starts the second half of University Athletic Association play this weekend when it battles its most recent foes, this time on the road.  On Friday (Feb. 1), the Eagles venture to Brandeis University before matching up against New York University on Sunday.  Auerbach Arena on the BU campus will serve as the setting for the 61st meeting between the Judges and Eagles and that game will start at 6:00 pm.  On Sunday, the Sportsplex serves as the site of the 61st battle between NYU and Emory, with that affair slated for a 2:00 pm tip.

THE COACHES – Head Coach Misha Jackson (Emory, '13) is in her second season at the helm of the Eagles' program.  Named Interim Head Coach in October of 2017, she guided the Eagles to a 13-12 slate last season, which included a 7-7 mark in University Athletic Association play, the highest win total in league play since 2013. She then had the Interim tag removed in March of this year.

She enters this weekend with a school and career record of 26-17.

Jackson joined the Eagles' staff as an assistant prior to the start of the 2013-14 season.  She played three seasons in an Eagle uniform (2010-11 through 2012-13), seeing action in a total of 78 games, 69 in a starting capacity. She closed out career ranked among the program's top-10 all-time performers in 11 categories.

Jackson is assisted by Sammi Goldsmith and Chuck Melito.

Carol Simon (Colby, '85) is in her 32nd year as the head coach at Brandeis.  During her stint with the Judges, she has compiled 441 victories and made four trips to the NCAA Tournament.

In her initial campaign patrolling the NYU sideline is Meg Barber (NYU, '02).  Appointed to her current post in June of 2018, Barber served as an assistant coach at Temple University from 2012 through 2016.

2018-19 RECORDS – Emory will square off against Brandeis with an overall record of 13-5, including a 4-3 ledger in UAA play that is good for a third-place tie.  The Eagles closed out a four-game home stand on a successful note last weekend by capturing double-digit wins over Brandeis (70-57) and NYU (70-49).  Senior Ashley Oldshue was named UAA Co-Player of the Week for her efforts that saw her post back-to-back double-doubles, ending the weekend with an average of 22.5 points and 12.5 rebounds.  Oldshue tallied a career-high 30 points and a season-high 15 boards vs. Brandeis before registering team highs with 15 points and 10 caroms vs. NYU. 

Emory is 6-2 at home and 7-3 in road/neutral contests.

Brandeis will entertain Emory with an overall slate of 7-10, 3-4 in the league.  After dropping last Friday's game at Emory, the Judges regrouped and snapped a four-game losing streak with a 56-52 victory at Rochester. BU is 4-5 at home and 3-5 in away games this year.

NYU will take an overall slate of 10-7 (2-5 UAA) into a Friday night home game vs. Rochester. 
Prior to coming up short against Emory, the Violets lost at Rochester by a 51-48 count.  NYU starts the weekend with a 6-1 record on its home floor and a 4-6 mark on the road.

SERIES RECORDS – In a series that saw the first game played on Jan. 20, 1989, Emory holds an all-time record of 33-27 vs. Brandeis, and has been victorious in five of the last six match-ups. Brandeis stands 16-13 against the Eagles in games that have been played on its home floor.

The series between Emory and NYU also has its roots in January of 1989 with the Violets holding the upper hand by a 42-18 margin.  The Violets have won 23 of the 29 contests between the two schools that have been played in NYC.

EMORY TRIO TO SERVE AS CAPTAINS – Serving as captains of the 2018-19 Emory women's basketball team are senior Ashley Oldshue (Glenview, IL), and juniors Lindsey Tse (Calabasas, CA) and Erin Lindahl (Yardley, PA).

EMORY DEFENSE STINGY – Heading into this weekend's action, Emory has held eight opponents to 55 or fewer and six to 50 or fewer points.  The Eagles hold down the No. 1 spot in the UAA and rank 71st in the D-III ranks (through Jan. 28) in scoring defense at 56.1 points per game.

In addition to that statistic, Emory ranks first in the conference in field goal percentage defense (.352).  

EAGLES SHARP AT THE STRIPE – Emory has been consistent from the foul line this season, converting 70 percent or better of its free throw opportunities in 13 contests (9 games of 80 percent or higher).  Last weekend, Emory was successful on 13-of-17 (76.5%) against Brandeis before slipping to 63.6 percent (14-of-22) in the NYU contest.

On the year, the Eagles are connecting at a 75.7 percent (221-of-292) clip, good for the No. 2 spot in the UAA and 13th nationally.

Allison Chernow stands as the team's top marksman from the foul line, connecting on 81.8 percent (63-of-77) of her attempts, good for fifth on the UAA ladder and 81st in D-III. Ashley Oldshue is one spot behind Chernow at 80.5 percent (70-of-87).

REBOUNDING A KEY FOR THE EAGLES – Emory finished with the rebounding edge rebounding in the games vs. Brandeis (41-39) and NYU (47-27) last weekend, running its record to 11-0 this year when finishing a game with the superior numbers in that department.  The Eagles have outrebounded nine opponents by 10 or more boards and enters the weekend tops in the league and 70th nationally in rebound margin (+5.8).

In the 11 contests that it has outboarded the opposition, Emory shows a 42.6-29.1 per-game edge. 
When the Eagles have been outrebounded, they stand 2-4 with a 40.3-33.3 deficit.

EMORY STRONG IN THE SECOND HALF
– The Eagles have outscored 15 opponents over the second half of play this year, eight of those by 10 or more points.  Over the last 11 outings, Emory holds a 410-306 (37.2-27.8) scoring advantage over the final two quarters of action.   Over the last nine contests, the Eagles have shot 46.9 percent (148-of-317) from the field in the second half vs. 30.6 percent (97-of-316) for the opposition.

OLDSHUE REACHES 1,000 CAREER-POINT PLATEAUAshley Oldshue became the 10th player in program history to reach 1,000 points in a career when she finished the Agnes Scott contest with a game-high 14 points.

Needing nine points to reach 1,000, Oldshue joined that exclusive club when she converted a bucket with 7:15 in the second quarter.  She closed out the night seven-of-11 from the floor.

Career-wise, she stands 7th on the school's all-time scoring derby with 1,170 points, 50 shy of tying Nytasha Thoms (1991-95) for the No. 6 spot.

TSE DIRECTS EMORY OFFENSE Lindsey Tse has guided the Emory offense with a steady hand this year, ranking first in the UAA and 10th (through Jan. 28) in the D-III ranks with an average of 5.9 assists per game. Tse has dished out seven or more assists on six occasions this year including a career-high tying 11 vs. Birmingham Southern back on Dec. 8.  Tse also holds down the No. 4 position among D-III players in assist/turnover ratio (3.66).

Tse has moved into 4th place on Emory's career chart with 369 assists and her 5.43 per-game average ranks as the No. 1 mark in school history.

RIPLEY GIVES BOOST OFF THE BENCH– Sophomore Blair Ripley has been a sparkplug off the bench for the Eagles and will enter the weekend averaging 17.1 minutes, 6.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.  She is shooting 47.9 percent (45-of-94) from the floor and has been successful on eight-of-17 three-point field goal attempts.  She is third on the club with 17 blocked shots and has grabbed six or more rebounds on eight occasions, leading or sharing for team honors in that category five times.  She has grabbed 10 or more boards on three occasions this year, most recently against Chicago (Jan. 13) when she snagged a game-high 11 caroms.

In the 70-52 victory at Rochester (Jan. 5), Ripley registered her first career double-double with 15 points and 10 boards.

OLDSHUE CONTINUES CONSISTENCYAshley Oldshue starts weekend game having scored in double figures in her last 14 and in a total of 17 contests. Oldshue tops the club in scoring with a 16.8 points-per-game average, good for the No. 3 spot on the UAA ladder, and her team-high 56.3 percent showing from the field (116-of-206) is second in the league and 19th in D-III (through Jan. 28).  Oldshue has converted 50 percent or better from the floor in 12 contests and is shooting 57.9 percent (73-of-126) over her last 10 games.  Her back-to-back double-doubles last weekend at home vs. Brandeis and NYU boosted her season total to five and career mark to 16.

In addition to her scoring and field goal percentage rankings, Oldshue also finds herself among the UAA's top 10 in rebounding (5th, 8.0 rpg), free throw percentage (6th, .797), blocked shots (2nd, 2.1 bpg) and offensive rebounds (t-3rd, 3.2 orpg).

Career-wise, Oldshue has produced 62 double-figure scoring contests and has 15 performances of 20 or more points to her credit.  She has 591 rebounds and stands 12th on the school's all-time ladder in that category.  Ashley is climbing up the program's career ladder for free throws with 287 makes at the stripe, good for second place and just 12 shy of tying Beth Bergmann (2003-07) for first. 

OLDSHUE BECOMES EMORY'S ALL-TIME LEADER IN BLOCKED SHOTSAshley Oldshue became the program's all-time leader in blocked shots in last Sunday's game vs. NYU with her two rejections pushing her career total to 105, one better than Alicia Moore's (1994-98) previous standard of 104.   Oldshue and Moore are the only two players who have cracked the 100-blocks mark during their time as Eagles.

Oldshue has registered 11 games with two or more blocks to her credit and her season total of 36 rejections represents a career high while ranking second on the school's seasonal list. 

CHERNOW A THREE-POINT THREATAllison Chernow has knocked down a team-leading 36 three-point field goals and her average of 2.0 treys per game is good for sixth place on the UAA chart.  Chernow, who has 10 outings with two or more triples this year, has been successful on 36 percent (36-of-100) of her attempts from beyond the arc with that effort slotting her sixth among league players.

Career-wise, Chernow is 11th on the program's career list with 86 three-point field goals and is now eyeing Shellie Kaniut's (2013-17) 10th-place mark of 92.

NOTESAllison Chernow checks into the weekend with a seven-game double-figure scoring streak to her credit and her 13.3 points-per-game average in UAA play is seventh on the league ladder … Overall, Chernow, who has produced 11 double-digit scoring performances this season, ranks ninth on the conference's overall scoring ladder (12.8 ppg) … Erin Lindahl's 15 points against Brandeis last Friday represented her ninth double-figure scoring performance of the season and 31st of her career … Lindahl has a 13-game streak of three-point field goals,  tying the program's 10th-longest mark … Lindahl is tied for 17th on the UAA chart in overall scoring average (9.9 ppg) … Senior Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod has eight games this season (32 in her career) with 10 or more points … Jackson-Sherrod is 12th among UAA cagers in field goal percentage (.442, 69-of-156) …  The Eagles have outshot 15 opponents from the floor this year … 11 of Emory's wins have been by 10 or more points and it is No. 1 in the UAA and 74th nationally in scoring margin (+11.8) …The Eagles are doling 16.8 assists per game, with that effort placing them second in the UAA and 32nf among all D-III programs (through Jan. 28) … Emory reserves have scored 20 or more points on seven occasions.
