Emory Women's Basketball Back Home For Wash U & Chicago Battles

GAME FACTS – The Emory women's basketball team returns home this weekend for a pair of University Athletic Association contests, starting on Friday (Feb. 8) when it entertains league leader Washington University.  On Sunday, the Eagles wrap up the home stand with a contest against the University of Chicago.

The Woodruff PE Center will serve as the site of the 61st meetings between Emory and both Wash U and Chicago, with the Friday contest against the Bears starting at 6:00 pm and the Sunday bout against the Maroons slated for a 2:00 pm tip.

THE COACHES – Head Coach Misha Jackson (Emory, '13) is in her second season at the helm of the Eagles' program.  Named Interim Head Coach in October of 2017, she guided the Eagles to a 13-12 slate last season, which included a 7-7 mark in University Athletic Association play, the highest win total in league play since 2013. She then had the Interim tag removed in March of this year.

She enters this weekend with a school and career record of 28-17.

Jackson joined the Eagles' staff as an assistant prior to the start of the 2013-14 season.  She played three seasons in an Eagle uniform (2010-11 through 2012-13), seeing action in a total of 78 games, 69 in a starting capacity. She closed out career ranked among the program's top-10 all-time performers in 11 categories.

Jackson is assisted by Sammi Goldsmith and Chuck Melito.

Randi Henderson (Iowa, '01) is in her second year as the head coach of the Wash U program and posts a school ledger of 34-13. In 12 seasons as a head coach, which includes a nine-year run (2006-07 through 2014-15) at Coe College and a one-year stint at Minnesota-Morris, Henderson has compiled a career mark of 205-114.

In her seventh campaign of patrolling the Chicago sideline is Carissa Sain.  Heading into a Friday evening contest at Rochester, Sain logs a school and career ledger of 115-59, which includes a pair of UAA titles and three berths to the NCAA D-III Tournament.

2018-19 RECORDS – Emory has won its last five contests and stands 15-5 in overall action and resides in third place in the UAA with a mark of 6-3.  The Eagles are coming off a productive road weekend that saw them claim victories over Brandeis University (72-42) and New York University (78-70).

Junior Allison Chernow averaged 14.0 points and 5.5 rebounds over the two contests, tying classmate Erin Lindahl for team scoring with 15 points in the win over Brandeis before totaling 13 points vs. NYU.  Lindahl registered back-to-back double-figure scoring performances and averaged 13.5 points and 6.0 boards for the weekend.

The team's won-lost mark ties the 1993-94, 1997-98 and 2013-14 squad's for the third-best 20-game record in school history.  Emory is 6-2 at home and 9-3 in road/neutral contests.

Washington University, ranked 21st in this week's WBCA Top 25 Coaches poll, sports an overall slate of 15-5 and sits atop the league standings at 9-0.  The Bears, who have not suffered a loss since Dec. 29, have won their last 10 games including last weekend's outcomes at Carnegie Mellon (61-58) and Case Western Reserve (81-62).  WU stands 8-3 in road/neutral contests.

Chicago, ranked 17th in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, will take an overall record of 16-4 into a Friday contest ta Rochester.  The Maroons, winners of their last four games, reside in second place in the UAA with a 7-2 ledger.  Last weekend, UC brought home wins over Case Western Reserve (60-54) and Carnegie Mellon (66-54).

SERIES RECORDS – In a series that saw the first game played on Feb. 17, 1989, Wash U holds an all-time record of 54-6 vs. Emory.  The Bears have won the last 13 contests between the schools including a 77-69 decision earlier this year (Jan. 11) in Saint Louis.  Ashley Oldshue led the Emory scoring attack with 19 points while Allison Chernow added 18 points.

The series between Emory and Chicago also has its roots in February of 1989 with the Maroons holding the upper hand by a 40-20 margin. UC has captured the last four and seven of the last 10 match-ups vs. Emory.  The Maroons held off the Eagles, 60-56, back on Jan. 13, with Erin Lindahl topping all players with 18 points. Chicago has won 18 of the 30 series games that have been played at the Woodruff PE Center.

EMORY TRIO TO SERVE AS CAPTAINS – Serving as captains of the 2018-19 Emory women's basketball team are senior Ashley Oldshue (Glenview, IL), and juniors Lindsey Tse (Calabasas, CA) and Erin Lindahl (Yardley, PA).

EMORY DEFENSE STINGY – Heading into this weekend's action, Emory has held nine opponents to 55 or fewer and seven to 50 or fewer points.  The Eagles hold down the No. 1 spot in the UAA and rank 79th in the D-III ranks (through Feb. 3) in scoring defense at 56.1 points per game.

In addition to that statistic, Emory ranks first in the conference in field goal percentage defense (.349), holding its last five and a total of 15 foes to less than 40 percent this year.   

EAGLES SHARP AT THE STRIPE – Emory has been consistent from the foul line this season, converting 70 percent or better of its free throw opportunities in 13 contests (9 games of 80 percent or higher).  

On the year, the Eagles are connecting at a 74.8 percent (247-of-330) clip, good for the No. 2 spot in the UAA and 18th nationally.  In their eight home games, the Eagles are shooting 79.5 percent (97-of-122) from the stripe vs. 72.1 percent (150-of-208) in the 12 away/neutral contests.

Allison Chernow stands as the team's top marksman from the foul line, connecting on 81.9 percent (68-of-83) of her attempts, good for fifth on the UAA ladder and 78th in D-III. Ashley Oldshue is one spot behind Chernow at 81.3 percent (74-of-91) with that showing 91st nationally.  

REBOUNDING A KEY FOR THE EAGLES – Emory finished with a 45-33 rebounding edge in last Friday's game at Brandeis, running its record to 12-0 this year when finishing a game with superior numbers in that department.  The Eagles have outrebounded 10 opponents by 10 or more boards and enters the weekend second in the league and 76th nationally in rebound margin (+5.8).

In the 12 contests that it has outboarded the opposition, Emory shows a 42.8-29.4 per-game edge. 
When the Eagles have been outrebounded, they stand 3-4 with a 40.1-33.9 deficit.

EMORY STRONG IN THE SECOND HALF
– The Eagles have outscored 16 opponents over the second half of play this year, nine of those by 10 or more points.  Over the last 13 outings, Emory holds a 489-363 (37.6-27.9) scoring advantage over the final two quarters of action.   Over the last 11 contests, the Eagles have shot 46.9 percent (175-of-373) from the field in the second half vs. 30.4 percent (115-of-378) for the opposition.

OLDSHUE REACHES 1,000 CAREER-POINT PLATEAUAshley Oldshue became the 10th player in program history to reach 1,000 points in a career when she finished the Agnes Scott contest with a game-high 14 points.

Needing nine points to reach 1,000, Oldshue joined that exclusive club when she converted a bucket with 7:15 in the second quarter.  She closed out the night seven-of-11 from the floor.

Career-wise, she stands 7th on the school's all-time scoring derby with 1,188 points, 32 shy of tying Nytasha Thoms (1991-95) for the No. 6 spot.

TSE DIRECTS EMORY OFFENSE Lindsey Tse has guided the Emory offense with a steady hand this year, ranking first in the UAA and 11th (through Feb. 3) in the D-III ranks with an average of 6.0 assists per game. Tse has dished out seven or more assists on seven occasions this year including a career-high tying 11 vs. Birmingham Southern back on Dec. 8.  Tse also holds down the No. 3 position among D-III players in assist/turnover ratio (3.87).  This past weekend, she finished with a total of 14 assists with just two turnovers.

Tse has moved into 4th place on Emory's career chart with 383 assists, just five from tying Mandy Jackson (1991-95) for third place, and her 5.45 per-game average ranks as the No. 1 mark in school history.

RIPLEY GIVES BOOST OFF THE BENCH– Sophomore Blair Ripley has been a sparkplug off the bench for the Eagles and will enter the weekend averaging 17.4 minutes, 7.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.  She is shooting 49.1 percent (54-of-110) from the floor and has been successful on nine-of-20 three-point field goal attempts.  She is second on the club with 23 blocked shots and has grabbed six or more rebounds on 10 occasions, leading or sharing for team honors in that category six times.  She has grabbed 10 or more boards on three occasions this year, most recently against Chicago (Jan. 13) when she snagged a game-high 11 caroms.

Ripley came through with solid two-game effort this past weekend, averaging 9.5 points and 7.0 rebounds. She shot 56.3 percent from the field (9-of-16) and was a force at the defensive end of the floor with a team-leading six blocked shots.  Her 10 points in the NYU game represented her fourth double-figure effort of the campaign.

In the 70-52 victory at Rochester (Jan. 5), Ripley registered her first career double-double with 15 points and 10 boards.

OLDSHUE CONTINUES CONSISTENCYAshley Oldshue starts weekend game having produced 18 double-figure scoring games this year.

Oldshue paces the club in scoring with a 16.1 points-per-game average, good for the No. 3 spot on the UAA ladder, and her team-high 55.2 percent showing from the field (123-of-223) is second in the league and 33rd in D-III (through Feb. 3).  Oldshue has converted 50 percent or better from the floor in 13 contests and is shooting 54.5 percent (24-of-44) over her last four games.  Her back-to-back double-doubles at home vs. Brandeis (Jan. 25) and NYU (Jan. 27) boosted her season total to five and career mark to 16.

In addition to her scoring and field goal percentage rankings, Oldshue also finds herself among the UAA's top 10 in rebounding (6th, 8.0 rpg), free throw percentage (6th, .813), blocked shots (2nd, 2.1 bpg) and offensive rebounds (3rd, 3.1 orpg).

Career-wise, Oldshue has produced 63 double-figure scoring contests and has 15 performances of 20 or more points to her credit.  She has 606 rebounds and stands 11th on the school's all-time ladder in that category.  Ashley is climbing up the program's career ladder for free throws with 291 makes at the stripe, good for second place and just 8 shy of tying Beth Bergmann (2003-07) for first. 

OLDSHUE BECOMES EMORY'S ALL-TIME LEADER IN BLOCKED SHOTSAshley Oldshue became the program's all-time leader in blocked shots on Jan. 27, vs. NYU, with her two rejections pushing her career total to 105, one better than Alicia Moore's (1994-98) previous standard of 104.   Ashley posted three blocks this past weekend on the road, upping her career total to 108.  Oldshue and Moore are the only two players who have cracked the 100-blocks mark during their time as Eagles.

Oldshue has registered 12 games with two or more blocks to her credit and her season total of 41 rejections represents a career high while ranking second on the school's seasonal list, two shy of tying Misha Jackson's No. 1 standard of 43 set during the 2012-13 season.

CHERNOW A THREE-POINT THREATAllison Chernow has knocked down a team-leading 41 three-point field goals and her average of 2.1 treys per game is good for third place on the UAA chart.  Chernow, who has 12 outings with two or more triples this year, has been successful on 36.6 percent (41-of-112) of her attempts from beyond the arc with that effort slotting her fifth among league players.

Career-wise, Chernow is 11th on the program's career list with 91 three-point field goals and is now eyeing Shellie Kaniut's (2013-17) 10th-place mark of 92.

NOTES –  Erin Lindahl has a 15-game streak of three-point field goals,  tying the program's 8th-longest mark … Lindahl is tied for 15th on the UAA chart in overall scoring average (9.9 ppg) … Allison Chernow checks into the weekend with a team-high nine-game double-figure scoring streak to her credit and her 13.4 points-per-game average in UAA play is eighth on the league ladder … Overall, Chernow, who has produced 13 double-digit scoring performances this season, ranks ninth on the conference's overall scoring ladder (13.0 ppg) … Erin Lindahl's 12 points against NYU this past Sunday represented her 11th double-figure scoring performance of the season and 33rd of her career … Lindahl is averaging 12.0 points in nine UAA contests, good for the No. 10 position on the league ladder … Senior Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod has nine games this season (33 in her career) with 10 or more points … Jackson-Sherrod is 6th among UAA cagers in field goal percentage (.451, 78-of-173) …  The Eagles have outshot 17 opponents from the floor this year … 12 of Emory's wins have been by 10 or more points and it is No. 1 in the UAA and 67th nationally in scoring margin (+12.5) …The Eagles are doling 16.9 assists per game, with that effort placing them second in the UAA and 30th among all D-III programs (through Feb. 3) …  Emory reserves have scored 20 or more points on eight occasions … Emory's 17 free throws in last Sunday's game vs. NYU was a high for a UAA game and the second-highest total this season (25 vs. Denison, Nov. 25) … Emory has fewer turnovers than the opposition in nine games … Emory shot 51.9 percent (28-of-54) from the floor against NYU last Sunday, the fourth time this season it had connected on 50 percent or better.
