Women's Basketball Falls 66-55 at #10 NYU

The Emory University women's basketball team fell to the hands of No. 10 ranked NYU Sunday afternoon, dropping a final verdict of 66-55.

For the Eagles, junior Claire Brock has another strong showing, scoring a game-high 26 points on 62.5% shooting from the field. Senior Anna Arato finished with 14 points of her own while accumulating seven rebounds and a steal. Junior Mariane Auza was a jack-of-all trades scoring six points, pulling down a team-high eight rebounds and contributing two steals and blocks apiece.

The Eagles had a solid defensive game plan, holding the Violets to 41.0% shooting from the field and a measly 9.1% from behind the arc. What made the difference for No. 10 ranked NYU was its presence on the glass. The Violets outrebounded the Eagles 45 to 36 and outscored Emory on second chance points 20-6. The Eagles faltered from the free throw line, shooting just 40% to the Violets 81.3%. Emory forced NYU into 16 turnovers throughout the game and generated six fastbreak points off the turnovers.

The Eagles found themselves in a hole early, allowing the Violets to go on a 10-4 run to open the game. A mini 5-0 scoring run from Brock would see Emory tie up the game towards the end of the first quarter but NYU would again stretch the lead out to five heading into the second. The Eagles battled in the second quarter tying the game up at 19 before surrendering an 11-0 run to the Violets that seemed to set the remaining tone. Though the Violets held a multi-possession lead for the bulk of the second half the Eagles made it interesting in the final minutes of the fourth quarter thanks to an Auza jumper that would cut NYU's lead to six. Despite Emory's best efforts, they were unable to keep NYU off the offensive glass, allowing them to ice the game and earn the 66-55 victory.

The Eagles stay on the road next weekend as they travel to St. Louis, MO for their conference matchup against WashU Friday night before making the trek to Illinois for their faceoff against University of Chicago Sunday afternoon.
