The Emory University women's basketball team never trailed Sunday afternoon as the Eagles defeated Case Western Reserve, 78-58, at the WoodPEC in Atlanta.
Emory completes the 2-0 UAA weekend to improve to 10-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play while Sunday marked the first time this year the Spartans have lost back-to-back games as CWRU fell to 10-4 and 1-2 in UAA games.
Senior Claire Brock had her second straight 20+ point performance, going for a game-high 23 points, as she was one of four Eagles with 10 points or more. Sophomore Morgan Laudick had 12 points with junior Paige Gross leading all bench scorers with 11. Sophomore Daniella Arnosky paced the Eagles with team-highs in both assists and rebounds with eight each.
The Eagles never wavered in the wire-to-wire win, leading from the opening tip off until the final whistle. Emory moved out in front by 11 in the opening quarter with an 18-7 edge and would lead by seven heading into the second. The lead never dipped below six for the rest of the half and the Eagles would carry a 31-23 score into the break.
The Spartans scored the first baskets of the second half but Emory answered with a 10-4 run to push the lead back to double digits midway through the third. CWRU cut it six over the next minute but the Eagles closed the stanza with a 13-4 run to open the lead to 54-41 and was able to maintain its double digit lead for the remaining of the contest.
Emory finished the game 31-for-65 from the field and knocked down eight three-pointers while holding CWRU to under 30% shooting, including a 6-for-29 mark from distance.
The Eagles have a quick turnaround as they will face Rhodes College in the final non-conference game Monday afternoon before returning to UAA competition with #1 NYU and Brandeis next weekend.
